Uneven Oven

If I cook a HM pizza in my electric fan oven on high (as high as it goes - 250) on the top shelf, it usually cooks the part of the pizza in the back of the oven first, and forces me to open the door and spin the pizza around so that the front cooks too.

Is this because my oven is rubbish, because its on the top shelf, or because I'm trying to cook the pizza on too high a temperature (the problem there is that pizza's need to be cooked in a very hot oven to be at their best - I'd go higher if I could).

I never cook that high in my oven.

My fan oven cooks hotter on one side than the other. Probably due to the direction the hot air is circulated.

For pizza's I cook middle to top of the oven and only at 200c max as its a fan oven. I find it cooks more even and through rather than burning the top or sides.

my fan oven is similar - it doesn't cook evenly (which i thought was the point of fan ovens!). I just have to make sure I turn things around half way

In a pizza oven you'd be hitting the high hundreds!

It's not just my oven then. Nevermind.

We've got an electric fan oven and I find that it cooks the left side of things more quickly than the right. I just make sure I turn stuff halfway through although it can be a bit of a pain if I'm making cakes or buns. But then, I've had gas ovens (which I prefer) and I find that they don't always cook evenly either.

we've just moved and i've now got a none fan assisted oven and i hate it! its so uneven, i can put something in on the middle shelf and it takes twice as long as if it would in my old fan assisted oven. i bung everything in on as high a shelf as i can get. im roasting a leg of lamb at the minute for the first time with this oven and im dreadin how much longer its going to take than usual!

Yep, mine is another fan oven that cooks more at the back. I too thought the whole point of a fan oven was to circulate the hot air to enable it to cook evenly.

Unforunately, the whole point of fan ovens is to circulate the hot air evenly around the advertising to enable the manufacturers to sell the things.

We had a double (1 small coventional, 1 large fan) oven and, like a lot of others I suspect, the fan open only saw action at Christmas and was an expensive storage cupboard for roasting dishes, etc. the other 364 days of the year. For just the two of us, the small top oven was more than adequate.

In terms of cost, it has to be my candidate for the No.1 most useless kitchen gadget.

Mine is a gas oven with a fan and browns at the back before the front is cooked.

I was recently told that the fan was only there to cool the outside of the oven to save on insulation and had no effect on cooking. I must admit it takes no less time to use than my previous non-fan gas oven.
