Hi there,
My subscription has just run out with my secruity provider, I remember a few years ago that you just download free security for the PC, is this still around at all, and if so can someone point me in the right direction.
Many thanks

Used AVG free for years. http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
Its antivirus only so no firewall however there are firewalls out there if you need that too however I use my router's firewall.0 -
AVGS awful
Use AVIRA or AVAST (Avira is the one id suggest)
Download AVIRA (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/

Only thing about avira is the annoying popup every day!Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

avg's crap....just look at the amount of people on here that have viruses because of avg.
avira antivir is a much better AV than avg. http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/
for a firewall i suggest the comodo firewall0 -
Which security has just run out? Most of the time a 'removal tool' is needed else bits get left behind and causes all sorts of problems:idea:0
-
Avast free is a good popular Antivirus
Zonealarm is a good free firewall (however theres not much need for a software firewall unless something actually gets onto the computer and starts sending info out - which defeats the point of having security in the first place) Windows firewall stops all inbound nastys and so do routers
What security did you have installed as you may need to run a specific removal tool to completely remove it from your system before you install another security (control panel add/remove does not always remove everything and this can lead to problems when installing the new security)
Also be aware that using more than one Antivirus can lead to conflicts and that free Antiviruses don't always remove all spyware and adware. Programs such as super antispyware can be used however this picks up things Antiviruses may pick up aswell.
PS staples sell BitDefender Antivirus and antispyware for £11 for 3 pc's (1 year) it's much better than the free software imho

Thanks for all the advice.
I have been using McAfee which I got a years free subscription to.
How would go in and remove the unwanted stuff.
Sorry if I sound a bit dim but all I use the pc for is for a bit of surfing and have no idea about the techie side of things.0 -
Once youve decided which software to use in Mcafees place, download the software ready to install then use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
Also take into consideration the software guide recommended by MSE is old and has errors in it (For example ~ Avira is the LIGHTEST on resources):idea:0
