Credit card taken over

Hello all,

You don't know me.... but I do know you!!

The list of useful stuff I've found here is too long to go into, but includes energy switch, bank accounts, holdays etc etc etc..so big thanks, but this is the first time I've posted here...

This may be the wrong place for this subject, and if so apologies, and if anyone can point me in the right direction then I''d be very grateful!

My Credit card (nationwide visa) has been "Taken over" by someone who has made 2 huge (£1k plus) transactions online and attempted another. They have changed the address, password and who knows what else.

I still have the card, no-one has broken into my home,
and Nationwide say several other customers have been targeted too.

I have to say Nationwide have been brilliant, they picked this up very quickly, and have been very helpful and easy to deal with, and I am not liable for the money as the pin was not involved.

I am absolutely stumped and frightened by this, has anyone else heard of anything similar??

many thanks, s-w

Something similar happened to DH's current account; someone phoned up pretending to him and managed to steal a month's salary. We presumed they'd gone through our household rubbish and managed to get enough details from paperwork to assume his identity, so we bought a shredder. Took nearly 3 months to get the money reimbursed by Abbey National into a new current account and we still didn't get an apology. I was prepared to fight for compensation but DH said to leave it.

I would recommend getting an Experian and Equifax report now and in a couple of months' time in case they've done anything else.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Do you mean they changed the password to your Nationwide Online Banking ??

if so then read through this

you can also go for "protective registration"

If you have been the victim of a mugging or burglary and personal identification documents have been stolen, there is a risk they could be used by the thief to obtain credit or other products and services fraudulently in your name. For an administration fee of £11.75 (£10 plus £1.75 VAT) CIFAS offers a service, provided on their behalf by Equifax, to protect your name and address from being misused in this way.

I had my Tesco credit card cloned but luckily Visa picked it up straight away.

The card was new, less than a week old and I had only ever used it once in a Tesco store and it had stayed at home after that. Yet someone using the credit card details tried to order a computer online but exceeded my credit limit which was low as it was a brand new card.

Tesco put the payment on pending and phoned me to make sure it was me trying to use the card and when I said no, they just cancelled it all.

The thing that got me though was that they suggested I might have compromised my card by using it in a dodgy shop or restaurant and let it out of my sight as the user had the expiry date and name as well. They were a bit upset when I suggested that if it had been compromised then it must have been a Tesco employee as tthat was the only place the card had been, and after that they told me that card cloning wasn't uncommon and I shouldn't worry about it.
