This sounds like an agony aunt letter but here goes:
A friend of mine recently downloaded her sons Ipod software onto her PC but after restarting it brings up the message to the effect 'your computer has shutdown this may have been caused by a software or hardware installation problems' it then brings up a list of options. First is start windows in normal mode 2nd is last good configuration then some safe modes but none of them work! They just take you back to the same menu.
Her system is Windows XP home edition if anyone knows how to help she and I would be very grateful

It is a dell but she cannot access anything else but this menu. The computer has been out of action for 3 weeks and she has tried every option several times but it just comes back to this menu.Val

What Does Dell PC Restore Restore?
Dell PC Restore will restore your computer software back to how it was when you first received it.
When you received your Dell computer the operating system, hardware drivers, and Dell software were all pre-installed. Dell PC Restore provides the ability to restore your computer back to that condition if you ever find you need to reinstall your operating system.
You will have to install any software or hardware drivers that you installed after receiving your computer. Items such as your Internet connection software, games, or separate software installed after receiving your computer will have to be installed after using Dell PC Restore.
This involves putting the restore disk in the PC and changing the BIOS settings so that it boots from the CD first
or on on Later Dell PC's
The Dell-specific Ctrl+F11 process is supposed to completely automate the restoration process, returning the hard disk to the state it was in when Dell shipped the computerEx forum ambassador

Perform Windows Update after Installing Windows® XPIf you performed any Windows Updates prior to reinstalling the operating system, the files are no longer installed. It is highly recommended to perform the Windows Updates to obtain security patches, fixes, and most importantly, to help protect you from unauthorized Internet attacks.Ex forum ambassador
