Problem with DVD drive

Just back from my SIL's who's asked me to post on here for her

The dvd drive (ide-dvd dvdrw8801) on her computer is driving her mad.

If you put a disc in the drive, it ejects it 2/3 times before accepting the disc.

When you go into My Computer it is showing all the information of the disc (I tried it with a music CD and it showed the title of the CD) but when you try to read the disc a pop up appears asking to burn info on the disc.

If you click on "OK" is tells you that it's going to format the disc and remove all the info.

Obviously this isn't right so I uninstalled the drive and it reinstalled it on boot-up but did exactly the same thing again

She's running Vista (If thats any help)

Can anyone give me any advice on how to sort her PC cause it's driving her mad

Thanks in advance:T

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Sounds like some burning software auto runs when trying to play a cd (Nero, Roxio?)

As for ejecting it ~ sounds to me like it either needs a clean or its on its way out

Check its drive cable and pins on the drive. Does it use CS / Master or Slave??

If other drives or its a Dell then check it is set to CS on the drives jumpers. Try Master if it has its own cable and is on the end of the drive ribbon cable or Slave if using the centre position on the ribbon cable.
