Tenant referencing: How much were you asked to pay?

As well as the deposit and rent in advance, I was asked to pay £252 which was for two references, the tenancy agreement, and a fee for the inventory of an unfurnished house. I decided I wasn't going to pay all that to move. I've found another house which sounds good, on the gumtree site, so fingers crossed it'll be a winner and I'll save myself a few hundred pounds. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0

My current Letting Agent, Manning Stainton in Leeds, has called me up today trying to get £17.50 or double that (for the couple of us) to give a reference to another letting agent.
We are having to move out as the landlady is bankrupt and the house is being repossessed. Not only have we had to pay the £160 for new admin fees and the new bond, we are being asked for this cash too! We couldn't believe the gall of the company and have been advised not to pay it!
Manning also have got rent that we have paid which is not going to the landlady as it has been in the actions of being repossessed for a while.
These companies just line their pockets and it's the young and poor people that can't afford to buy that have become victims having to shell out costs whilst the greedy landlords have to forfeit one of their luxury holidays to Dubai!0
