sold a car and 1 week later the tyres have no tread

bought a car from a dealership last saturday and have just had the front tyres off today, my dad says they are illegal as they have no tread along either edge of the tyre and that it was illegal for the dealership to let me drive off with the car in this condition

is this right?

im going to get in touch with the dealership and let him know hoping he'll pay for the replacement tyres, if he's unwilling what can i say or throw at him to persuade him?

Maybe you should have taken someone along with you to ensure the car was "tip top". Unfortunately now it's going to seem strange to the dealership that you back a week later with a problem that you should have notice at the time, but your dad is right a car cannot be sold to a customer in a unroadworthy state.

i was told before i saw the vehicle that if the tyres weren't ok they would be replaced which they havent been, i made a point of mentioning it if every email and phone coversation we had and he always reassured me they would be.

Im going to have to buy some new tyres anyway but can i expect him to reinburse me from a legal point of view?

They may be just legal, did you or your Dad measure the tread?

Its the centre three quarters that need to be at least 1.6mm, the sides can be less. Although having watched a video on the Autocar website i tend not to take them that low. In the video they compared the braking in wet conditions of the same car with tyres at 1.6mm and 3mm, the car with 1.6mm tyres was still doing 50mph where the other car stopped!! Made me think....
  • Its a case of get under and use the old mk1 eyeball before parting with the lolly, legal tyres as Boatman points out can be almost bald, my own tyres never get anywhere near the legal limit before being replaced.

Unfortunately the arguing has to be done before you part with the dosh. The car could be driven and given to any teenager in a supermarket car park and the tyres trashed within 20 mins/yds let alone 20 miles.

Sorry, but it's just the argument you will get:confused:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Just a thought, but if you took the time and effort to reiterate this point on every email, did you not find it necessary to check when you actually picked the car up?
