Moving gas and electric meters

Options
HI,

My gas and electric meters are in a cupboard in the hall. I want to relocate them the other side of the cupboard wall, which means they will then be inside the front porch. This will free up a lot of space in the hall as it is extremely small.

the distance between the current location and the proposed location will be no more than 25 CM.

Any idea what the going rate is to move a gas/electric meter - does it have to be British Gas or can any gas certified engineer do it?

:j

I think you have to get Transco and another electric company i cannot remember to move a meter. Much will depend on where the gas supply and electric cable come up into the property. If these enter in the porch already you may be able to get corgi man and an electrition to do it. If not it sounds expensive. I am just of this oppinion because of meters i had moved during an extension in 2007.
  • Above post is wrong. As the distance you require is less than one meter, then it would be free of charge, providing no additional pipework or major alterations are required.

That only applies to up or down not through a wall. The electricity meter has to be moved by the distribution business. For the gas meter, if the main cutoff value has to be moved then I think I has to be done by National Grid Transco.

I enquired about this last year. We were advised it would be somewhere in the region of a thousand pounds.

Like the OP we only wanted ours moved a short way. Needless to say we didn't bother.

No idea if that would be an average price or if we were quoted silly money. We do tend to pay through the nose for things in the Scottish Highlands.

Btw...that was only for our electric meter(s).

As a meter reader, I was continuingly being asked the cost for moving a meter so I brought it up with my team manager at one of our 'team breifs'. He duly brought it up at a managers meeting and the answer eventully came back 'tell them a minimum of £1000', the price may vary depending on work involved but that is the starting price to quote if asked.

Firstly what part of the country are you in as it may not be National Grid I(transco no longer exists) if National Grid area 0870 903 9999 domestic connections dept.
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.
  • hi bieng involved in the meter retail side of things we are always bieng told of silly quotes that seem to be made up by the utility boards. But your case should not be too expensive as there is no main cable to lay i guess at about 160-200 pounds but get them to give you a quote and there is nothing to stop you going to other suppliers and asking them to do it if you change supplier to them they may do it even cheaper or lol for free.

Gas- it depends if the incoming service needs altering. If it does and its steel, you will have to have a new plastic (PE) service layed. Thats when it gets expensive.

It may well be that no service alterations are involved? Maybe you could just get a competent engineer to resite the meter?

Either way, NG do not do work of this nature free of charge.
