The HMRC website is very easy to navigate:

Tax isn't reclaimable on travel to work UNLESS the location is of a temporary nature (like a construction site which exists for under 2 years for example). Just because you only worked there for a short period doesn't mean it is a temporary location.

There is no special form to complete. Just write to your tax office setting out the names and addresses of all your employers in the years you want to claim together with the dates you were employed. If yu were claiming or a student in between, say so, so that they have a full picture of what your income was for those years. No need to send P60's, etc unless they ask for them.

As I said above, you don't need to send any documents with your letter. If you give HMRC a complete picture of all that you have dne during the yeras in question, they will trace the details from information supplied by your past employers.

I have alwys been told that you MUST supply the original p60 or p45 from each employer

You only need to supply a P45 if you are reclaiming tax from the current year. You only need to supply your P60 if you are claiming tax from a previous year and it is just after the end of the tax year (like now) - because HMRC don't get their copy of the P60 until a little after the employee.

If you are claiming now for tax year 2008/9 then you need the P60 or P45. For tax years before that you don't as HMRC will have the information provided you give the employers' details.
  • Do employers automatically have to send you a P60? I am a student and have done various bits of casual work for lots of employers over the year. Last year I had to chase some employers up to get a end-of-year statement and never got a P60 for some of them. Is that right?

How long would I have to leave it to write a letter to HMRC to claim tax for 08/09 without including a P60?

Thanks in advance! I'm not owed much, but every little helps :)

You would only get a P60 if you were employed by that employer on 5 April, otherwise you need your P45's. If you were not employed at 5 April, you can apply for your refund now by sending your P45's to HMRC. If you were employed at 5 April, your employer must give you a P60, but failing that, you would need to wait 2-3 mths for the info to filter through from your employer to your tax records.
