Money posted through door, addressee unknown

(I wasn't sure if this really fitted under 'consumer' rights) ... it is at least a query over rights.
Anyway, a friend arrived home to find an envelope containing money had been posted through their letterbox. The problem is that the name written on the envelope is totally unknown to them. There's no surnames, just forenames & simply says on the envelope 'To aaaa, thanks, yyyy'.
The question therefore is where one stands.
They are clearly not the intended recipient. The names are not familiar with anyone living in the immediate area and there are no other contact details.
One would hope that they realise their mistake (i.e. posted it in the wrong street, wrong house number etc) ... and return, or leave a note.
What would one reasonably be expected to do?
Thanks.

not spend it and wait for the correct owners to pop round for their money0

I would honestly log it with the police as lost property. This then stops any funny business if the original person turns up upset, or the intended recipient works out where it has gone,0

that should probably be found property, but you know what I mean0

i agree , take it to the station,, we often get money put through our letter box by mistake, there is a window cleaner in a nother street similar name same number.. easy mistake for someone to make. better to be honest.1. i'm bi polar.:rotfl:2. carer for two autistic sons.:A 3. have a wonderful but challenging teenage daughter. 4. have a husband that is insatiable. 5. trying to do an open degree.0

If you take it to the police station, you will never see it again and the intended recipient will not get it either.
Personally I would hang onto it and wait until some one comes round to collect it.0 -
if no one comes back for it in say, 2/3 months, then spend it. it is a lot of money? x2012 Wins - Danepak Fridge Magnet, £20 Just Eat Voucher, iTunes Song Download, Yellow Toaster and Kettle, Thorntons Bunny, 6 Months Gym Membership, £250 Multipower Products, 3 X Dalepak Vouchers, 10 minute sunbed session, Lucozade Sport, 2 X BMI Flights, Android Zeemote,0

I'd say keep it safe in your home until someone realises their mistake and comes back to collect it!!0

Contact your local newspaper or Radio Station, they may be able to help out by advertising it for free. The correct person must identify the names on the envelope, the amount of money in the envelope and the house where the money was posted. The correct person will know where it is.0

Lil bit nonspecific there. It's obvious from the OP's post that it was from a Mr Yyyy, and intended for me, Mr Aaaa Shelfstacker. The contents of the envelope are like Schrodinger's Cat, it contains every possible amount of money ever until I get hold of it, open it and spend the contents on alcohol. The house was one with a letterbox and it had either an odd or an even number on it.
OP - fork it over.0
