Been paying two house insurances since May 2007.

Hi all

I can't believe I have only just noticed that when I switched home insurance in May 2007, the old one did not cancel and I have been paying for it ever since.
I have now cancelled it via my online banking.

Will I be able to get all the overpaid money back ? It's about £700!

Has this happened to anyone else ? I'd be grateful for any tips as to how best to deal with it.
I have all the paperwork for the old insurer, and the new one since May 2007.

I hope someone can put my mind at rest...
thanks
Alan

Have you be being sent renewal notices and new policies through each year for the old insurance policy?

  • Hi Alan,

I did the same thing just recently (thought one was my car insurance). Insurance companies have a duel insurance payback where they have an agreement that if you provide them with proof of your other insurance, both companies will pay back 50% each of the double payment. (this might be different sums due to policy costs)

You have to inform both companies of this and give photocopied evidence of policies, I got a £700 refund within 4 weeks. Good Luck
  • thanks for the replies, it sounds promising.

There was a renewal letter, and I am sure I would have phoned them up to cancel when I made alternative arrangements. Anyway a few months later we moved house so I would certainly never have received the renewal for the second year.
I've been paying to insure a house I haven't even lived in for the past 18 months or so!!
    what a tool!
I've summarised the case in a letter which is now ready to send to the insurance company. I will approach the original one first and see what they say when i phone them after the bank holiday...

    thanks again
