Referencing in Microsoft word

I don't know how best to explain the problem so have given an example:
If I cross-reference the following text using the referencing tool in microsoft word like below:
First line 1
Second Line 2
Third Line 3
Fourth Line 2
But then want to add a line:
First line 1
Line in between 2
Second Line 3
Third Line 4
Fourth Line 2
As you can see the repeated cross-reference remains number 2 when it should now be 3. How can I ensure this referenced number changes to 3 too without having to manually change it? Any help will be much appreciated!

I don't understand what you're trying to do. Is this a list of things, with each one numbered?
Which cross-referencing tool are you using?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Word doesn't automatically update the sequence numbers when you add a note, you need to force it to do so.
There's information on how to do it in the following word document

Sorry I haven't explained it clearly. But the link is what I wanted! Thank you:
Cross-reference numbers do not update automatically as you type. Instead, it is necessary to perform an ‘Update Field’ operation to tell Word to do the work... To update the fields in the document, choose ‘Select All’ from the ‘Edit’ menu and pres F9.
It works! It works! It works! Thank you! That will save me a lot of time during referencing an essay.0
