Lots of old money e.g sixpences etc

I have been given a big tin full of old pennies, farthings, sixpences etc. Is there anything I can do with them. The oldest is 1897 and the newest 1960's.

Surely there is something I can do with them?

I believe that a certain date for the old pennies is worth quite a bit as they didn't make many that year.....

You could do a bit of research on the 'net and find out if any of them are worth anything. I got a winston churchill crown from my dad last year and was well chuffed......until I found out they made thousands of them and it was worth about £1.95 :(

I am currently selling a 1966 sixpence on ebay as an unusual 40th birthday present!! I wasn't sure what to set the opening price at but settled for 15p as ebay had the halfprice selling fees on Friday. I do have a bid so I will have to see if it is worth doing, but at 15p a time, probably not.!!

Do you think they could be turned into some form of jewellery or sculpture??

I think some silver coins are worth more than others (pre 1937?) because they have a higher silver content. You could do some research online. I remember in the 80s there was a big rush on them and people were paying 13 x face value!

Pre 1947 British coins have silver content, whereas 1947 + are made of cupro nickel.

    1920 - 1946 contain 50% silver
    pre 1920 contain 92.5% silver

Silver sells for somewhere around £4 an ounce. People seem to pay scrap value + for pre 1947 British silver coins.

I love silver - have bought/collected loads of old British silver coins.

Noooo!!! Dont ever clean them if you plan to sell them!! It will seriously devalue them! I did the same with loads of old coins when I was young and wrecked the lot!! Came up nice and shiny though!!

By all means, give them a clean if you want to display them or are not going to sell them.

  • keep the ones that are worth something (see earlier posts re research, internet coin sites etc) any that aren't take to your bank, they have a conversion chart to exchange pre-decimal to current coinage. I took my old neighbours coin into my bank (Natwest) & they worked out what it was worth in todays money & gave it to me there & then
