Toilet flush button stays down when pressed!

I have a low-level cistern with a button on top which you press to flush. When I press the button, the cistern empties as normal, but the button won't return to its original position, and the water keeps trickling out into the pan. If I remove the cistern lid, and push down the plastic plunger thing the button returns to normal and the cistern stops filling.
Any ideas why it keeps sticking like this? Its a modern cistern - no ball !!!! and all plastic mechanics inside.

Hi staffie 1, Not much to go on but with the cistern lid lifted up press the button and see if you get a result. This would indicate a possible kinked cable (if fitted) when in situ. Is the filler float interfering with the "plastic plunger thing"? What type of drain is it, a flap or a central shuttle? When did the problem start, from fitting or has something been done recently? A bit more info would be useful as several types of mechanisms (and some very bad designs)make for a difficult diagnosis.0

Thanks Lancastrian. Tried flushing with lid lifted up but makes no difference. Doesn't seem to be any interference with filler float and plunger with goes up when cistern empties then down when it fills. Drain is central shuttle. It's just started happening - probably wear and tear I guess...If you will the end, you must will the means.0

I think it's called a 'dump valve' rotate the body and remove, clean the rubber washer at the bottom and around the base of the fitting, dirt can sometimes cause this.0

Hi Staffie - if i understand your op when the lid is off the cistern works ok and with the lid fitted the cistern keeps running - if this is the case the chances are the prob lies with the push down buttons themselves - some of the buttons come with rods that push down on the syphon and open it up to let the water flush - if the rods have been incorrectly fitted they will be keeping the syphon open and letting the water trickle through - check they are fitted correctly - some manufacturers provide rods with the cistern that have to be cut to the right length which means they can fit several size/shapes of cisterns which seems ludicrous considering the price of some of these close coupled wc suites - hope this might help a bit - good luckBORN TO RIDE - FORCED TO DRIVE

just to add what others have said (all good advice) check the operation of the button when it is removed from the syphon. You should be able to work out whether it is the button sticking or the syphon.
Also can you let us know whether the button is connected to a cable to to a set of rods (as mentioned above) and is the button split into two half moon buttons, or is it a single button.
If you ascertain it is the syphon (not the button) then a clean up, with a little grease smeared on the rubber will help.
If it is the button, then follow the advice others have given.0 -
Hi there guys and gals,
I had this problem and as toilet was new phoned manufacturer. They sent parts free of charge with instructions on how to fix the problem. Was advised though that normally costs £1.99 for this.
Hope this helps
