you are aware that a photo licence only lasts 10 years yes

I am aware, but you see I still have the old style (non-photo) licence which is valid from 1976 until 2019 when I will be 70. It cost me the princely sum of £5, which I probably begrudged back in 1976.

The fact that I'm 60 now means I have, coincidentally, another 10 years until it expires. ;)

I actually passed my test back in 1966 when I was still at grammar school, so I must have had a licence document prior to my existing one. I can't find it now, but I have a recollection of it being a little red covered 'book'.

I was very lucky to go to a school that had the innovative idea of sponsoring and subsidising driving lessons with a local one-man driving school. I remember passing my test at Teddington in a Ford Anglia 105e, the one with the curious raked-back rear window. As was often the case your first purchase was the same as you learnt to drive in and felt comfortable with (still is?), so my first ever car (pictured below) was to be a second-hand 105e for which I paid £85. Happy Daze.

Why "retest"? Thought you just had to say you were OK to drive - ? and possibly get note signed by GP to confirm?

Oh, now you've said that I'm not sure. Perhaps I was thinking of the numerous discussions that have resurfaced over the years about re-testing older drivers.

Ah well, I'll worry about that when I reach 70 in ten years time, and I'm tearing around the neighbourhood in my V8 Zimmerframe :rotfl:

  • hrmm, i could of saved around 8k over the last 6 years of driving if i hadn't bothered with insurance or driving lessons..

and had i known i'd only get a £115 fine i'd of done it...

really ticks me off, those who have money get given free cars and low fines just because they are footballers or whateer, whilst the people who struggle to buy things have to pay full whack because they earn little money and don't have celeb status

3 points and £60 is what you would get if you were stoped driving and issued with an endorsable fixed penalty ticket. I wonder if the report got the fine the wrong way around ie £115 court costs and £60 for the ticket. The insurance company most probably would still have covered Fuller 3rd party insurance even though he didn't have a licence ( a quirk of the legal system ).

    Hi, Dave (nice motor!)

You would have sent off your old licence to get your present one. I'm guessing you are not living in the same house as you did in 1966 when you were at school but haven't moved since 1976.

Yes LittleVoice, I do vaguely recall now having to send the old one back.

And you're quite correct on all counts regarding my dwelling history ;)
