My Spouse Doesn't Know!!!

My OH is definitely of the disposition "I will stick my fingers in my ears and let you sort it out as you know what you are doing" This is fine in the sense I have control over whats going on, but it does get very stressful sometimes and wish someone else could just sort it out for me. We owe about 12k and he knows this, and has got a bit better since I have been constantly talking about MSE. He still seems to think though that if I am being more careful with money and paying things off that we are gonna have more money to spend, not that we are going to reduce the debt. Last week I had paid everything I needed to and he rang me and said There was only £160.00 in his bank account is that right. Before he had asked me though he had drawn £150 of it out and blew the money on new jeans and top!!!!!! Good job I had stashed the rest of the money for food and due direct debits to a different account!! he just isn't programmed to deal with money in a sensible way. His punishment this week though for the frivalous money spending is he doesn't have a choice on what he has for tea, he'll get whatever is on buy one get one free!! :rotfl:0

I too kept the debts from other half and was so scared of the post coming I would do anything to get him out of the house on a Saturday BUT since I came clean we are closer than ever and are going bankrupt on 13th March, as long as you love each other debts are not a problemif i had known then what i know now0

I know what I'd do- I'd make him take them straight back to the shop for a refund!0 -

I know, I know, but I am just too soft. Probably why we got in debt in the first place. Don't know how to teach an old dog knew tricks. I'll just hide hide ALL his money from now on!0 -
I'm 70, he's 71, we were married 4 years ago, both had previous marriages and previous experiences of money ups and downs.
We do it between us. We both have our own current and savings accounts but we also have a joint account which pays all the household bills by direct debit. We also both use Quicken and we reconcile statements when they arrive.
Today it has taken us ages to sort out a problem. He transferred £16 from the joint account back to his current account to cover the monthly cheque to the milkman. This has never showed up on his current account although it shows up as leaving the joint account. £16 isn't a lot, but...it has taken him ages on the phone this afternoon to the bank that holds his current account - where's the £16? Apparently it has gone to the Bank of Scotland to a credit card account. Now, he doesn't have, and never has had, any account with the Bank of Scotland, certainly not a credit card with them. Apparently it's not uncommon for money to go astray like this. The bank lady said it happens all the time, they're used to it, they just claim it back, the other bank will have it in a 'holding account' because it's money they've received but can't identify. I've just received my Experian report which shows every little thing, every time we 'shopped around' for car insurance etc, both our names, previous addresses, my previous names....but there's no mention at all of the Bank of Scotland!
Just shows, you've got to be on the ball. As they say 'Who's going to look after your money if you don't?'

Locana wrote:i was watching Richard and Judy today, when they were talking about how Tessa surely sould have known that something was amiss with their finances. Richard was saying it was impossible that she did not know, I was getting really mad at the TV, not just because Richard is an a**, but that he was ignorant to the fact that this happens all the time. I really wanted to phone up and tell him to look at this website!! It may well be that Tessa let him take care of all the finances, and she was happily getting on with her career. Richard was saying that she was an intelligent woman, and should have known better!! Well I'm really intelligent (!) but I didn't tell my other half what I was doing with my money etc.... As do lots of people..
:rotfl: I love the "'not just because Richard is an a**" :rotfl:
