Windows XP driver for PS/2 Mouse?

Are there any Windows XP drivers for old PS/2 mice and, if yes, where can I get one?

My USB mouse isn’t working properly. I have ordered an replacement and in the meantime I am trying to use various old Microsoft and Logitech PS/2 mice without success.

I am using a PS/2 to serial port adapter as my laptop doesn’t have a PS/2 socket.

The Logitech site states that it no longer supports PS/2 mice and I need to use an Operating System driver. I can’t find one in XP or on the Microsoft site.

XP doesn’t see or recognise a PS/2 mouse attached to the serial port either on boot up or if I use the Add Hardware Wizard. I know the port and adaptor work as I tested another device on it and that installed and worked ok.

Thanks

  • Hi,

I got an usb mouse in a pound shop for ehhhh, a pound, and it was plug and play, I've used it with XP and vista, might do you until your new one arrives.

You could try here for a driver.

Did the PS/2 to serial adapter originally come with the PS/2 mouse you're using? Many of these adapters essentially do nothing other than wire the pins through and it relies on electronics in the mouse to be able to detect it is on a serial port and switch to that standard.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
XP will automatically see a PS/2 mouse without the need for drivers so like bonzer said it's most likely the adapter that is causing the problem rather than Windows.
  • As per above, you could go down the route of control panel->add hardware. You should have a PS/2 Compatible mouse listed. Windows has a generic driver on the installation CD, so NO other drivers are required
