Have you considered the Youth Hostel? It's showing availability for this weekend.

Not sure the family would go for a hostel as they have a young child, i'll suggest it though, thanks

My family (me, hubby & 8 year old son) have stopped in a couple of hostels during the past year. They are generally fairly basic, but clean and very friendly places. They normally have large self-catering kitchens, but some also provide catering as well (don't know if Aviemore do). Hostels that have family rooms normally have a selection of games, books etc to help keep kids entertained.

We've not actually stayed at the Aviemore hostel yet, but we are booked in there for 3 nights at the end of May. Looking forward to it.

  • I much prefer YHA hostels to hotels. The hostel in Aviemore is excellent and is family friendly and very near the town centre. I particularly recall dozens of rabbits hopping around the grounds - children will love the hostel.

If you are visiting Aviemore, you must not miss the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre. http://www.reindeer-company.demon.co.uk/Hello/hello.htm

We visited Aviemore two or three years ago during the October half-term. Our visit to see the reindeer was absolutely magic. We were taken up to the hills to see and feed the reindeer. When we returned to the main road we saw some of the reindeer practising pulling a sleigh before travelling to Harrods for the start of the Christmas festivities. Can't promise any sleighs at this time of the year but still a fantastic day out.

I have found all the Scottish hostels I have visited first-class, but I have very special memories of Carbisdale Castle http://www.carbisdale.org/ (we slept in the 'Spooky Room'!) and Loch Lomond http://www.syha.org.uk/SYHA/web/site/Hostels/LochLomond.asp - both family friendly hostels. Lots of toys provided for the children plus books and games for older children and adults. Both hostels had wonderful log fires. Internet access is available for a small fee at many of the hostels.

Cooking in the well equipped hostel kitchens is always fun as there are always interesting people to chat to from all over the world, but many of the hostels provide excellent meals at a very reasonable cost (not Aviemore but there are plenty of places to eat or buy a take away nearby).

Thanks for that useful information Porkie. We're stopping at the Aviemore hostel in May and are really looking forward to it.

If you're interested in watching wildlife, Aviemore and the surrounding area is fabulous. I'm a huge fan of Scotland and try to holiday in Aviemore every year.

Have a look at this thread for details on the wildlife you're likely to see:

Planning a hol in Scotland and like wildlife?

    Kind Regards

Thanks Nile. Funnily enough, I found that thread last week and copied it into my favourites. It's got lots of very useful information on it.

After we leave Aviemore, we're going to Inverness for a couple of nights where we're going dolphin spotting. Really hope we see them!

I'm just back from the weekend in Aviemore last night. Thanks for your suggestions on the hostels but I managed to find a holiday home called Lynwood, 66 Dalnabay in Silverglades. Booked through Cairngorm Highland Bungalows. They have a website with a load of different properties but this one sleeps 8. The house was very accommodating. They supplied all linen, cot and high chair free of charge and prices were extremley reasonable. I only stayed two night and rest of family stayed 3. Lots of deer in the woodlands behind the house. A short 20 min drive to the ski centre and close to shops and restaurants. Would highley reccommend!
