Sony Vaio notebook parts - help!

I've got a 2 year-old (hence out of warranty, so no-one wants to know) Sony Vaio FCG-FR315B notebook pc, and it needs a new fan. It sounds like a pneumatic drill on my desk, which is not fun!

Have tried 2 local pc repairers - both recommended and reputable. They agree that it's the fan/cooler unit, but can't get parts. They say Sony parts are really difficult to obtain and v. expensive. Also reckon that substitute parts of other makes won't fit, so we're stuck with Sony.

Anyone got any ideas of how to obtain the parts. Bought it from PC World (first mistake) and they want £120 before they even look at it, and then the part, if they can get it, and they can't tell me before they look, would be on top of that.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Please bear in mind that I'm totally non-techie and I just want my pc to work so that I can hear myself think - and I don't want to spend my life-savings!

Thanks in anticipation.

You sometimes see laptops on Ebay which say they're not working and only suitable for parts; if the fan on one of those was OK, you could buy the laptop and get your friendly techie to install the fan? I'll keep my eyes open on ebay for you ;)

Edit: Found THIS one, finishes tomorrow, reasonable price. so far. I would think Vaio laptop fans are interchangeable - someone on here will know!

Actually, there are loads on there - search for 'sony vaio faulty'.
I only exist in my own mind - if you can see, hear or read me, you are a product of my imagination.

  • Thanks for that Browntoa,

That was where I started and they can't help. They transferred me to the Sony Support number that charges £12.50 a call, but the chap who took my initial call wasn't even sure if they could help, so I decided not to pay the £12.50.

Certainly wouldn't buy a Sony again.

    Thanks anyway.

Thanks - that's a really helpful suggestion. Will get onto techie people and check that parts are compatible.

At this rate my PC will be one of the ones ending up on Ebay!
