Paul I recently bought my first LCD TV and the picture is fantastic much better than my old CRT set. Its a Sony 40 V4000 and I got it from M & s with a 5 year guarantee.
They have an offer on at the moment of a 37" Sony V4000 for £499 with a 5 year guarantee which I think is excellent. My only advice is buy it as big as you can never mind overpowering the room!!!:rotfl::wink:

I been wondering this too (plasma v lcd) and was in argos.. they happened to have a samsung lcd and a plasma side by side ..(the plasma was cheaper)
I couldnt believe the diffrence the plasma looked quite dull in comparison to the lcd It was quite noticable too my oh had been going on about the quality of plasma's (his mate got one) But when he seen them side by side he changed his mind.
Im now definatly going for the lcd
Paul if you have the chance to pop into a store selling both have a look get the sales people to turn them on if neccesary its amazing how diffrent they are...
Or if your saving for a tv save £2000 and go for the led tv from samsung they are fantastic and new on the market they have individual led's that do the backlighting so you get none of the greying out on dark scenes (so we were told by some fella in maplins)

Plasmas cost a lot more to run and emit heat.

We are waiting for the OLED to become slightly more reaslistic.

I would have more confidence in that site if it was not sponsored by TV manufacturers.

I agree, sorry I only took a quick look and thought it may help :(

I wasn't chiding you - it's just that I have never seen a comparison site that fairly compares the two size for size!

We've recently bought a Toshiba LCD 42XV553db from Argos for the bargain price of £499 and it's a fab picture.

OH was pro Plasma until he read about picture burn (if you have Sky the logo can burn in) and it uses more power so the LCD is greener.

We only use our TV for watching TV/films not gaming and quite honestly whichever you opt for will impress you hopefully.

I have a plasma and a lcd, and i have to say my panasonic plasma is much better than my lcd, my mom has the sony v4000, it is a nice tv until you watch a film that has a dark backround and then you have the black blocks.

My recomendation would be anything under a 32 inch lcd any thing bigger i would have a plasma, has for screen burn, its a load of baloney, you do get image retention, but most plasmas like mine have a screensaver.

One thing i wouldnt use a plama for would to play video games, but without a shadow of a doubt plasmas over 32inch knock spots of larger lcd tv's.

heres and indipendent review from tesco and even they say plasma's have better viewing angles, contrast and brightness.

  • All I have to add to this is to try before you buy. 18 months ago I was looking to buy a new TV and was lucky enough to be in a shop with many sizes of both formats. Admittedly the LCD panels were much brighter, but to me the picture looked fake, the plasma to me looked far more realistic. The colours and tones were more realistic. I plumped for the plasma and have been VERY happy with it so far. Having had sky HD installed, it is a wonderful experience.

I have seen a number of LCD panels in homes and admittedly they have tended to be the cheaper models and would much rather what I have any day.
  • it really depends what type of picture your personally looking for....we have a 42inch plasma samsung and its great great picture especially watching the footie on HD however i no the poster above states that its balony regardng screen burn I wouldnt trust it it can happen and its an expensive when it does happen....lcds are great for games a friend plays his xbox on his lcd 32 and its great brill picture!!....your best bet would go down to somewhere like comets and ask them say your not looking to buy at the moment but you would like to know the difference between the 2 they will be able to help you....hope this helps

i have a plasma philips with sky hd, and an lcd with virgin.
just try to test the tv you buy with the system you are using.

the philips plasma and my sky box don't get on, resulting in a shaky screen occasionally. picture quality is fantastic though in hd.
