Imperial/Metric gas meter question

Hi, I've been trying to get my head around this.
I have an imperial (cuft) gas meter, but my supplier is billing me in cubic meters (and has been for some time.)

Do I owe them money, or do they owe me?

We are thinking of switching suppliers, and don't want a big shock soon.

Thank you

    Welcome to the forum.

You are actually billed in kWh.

If you have an Imperial meter the company use a factor of 2.83 to convert the 100 cubic feet(1 gas unit) to cubic metres.

The quick way to check if you are being billed correctly is to check that each gas unit is 31kWh approx.

You have been underpaying your usage, you have only paid for 1/3 of what you have used.

Not if they have converted his cubic feet to cubic metres.

Orite I just read the post as he was being billed as if he had a metric one.
  • You have been billed incorrectly but don't allow them to rebill you fully - you are within your rights if it was a mistake not to pay the extra.

Npower do not re-charge back normally - so don't allow them to if they are your supplier and try.

We don't know if the OP has been billed incorrectly or not. And if they have, the supplier can certainly back bill, whether it's their error or not.

I don't know why you have commented on a thread that is nearly 3 years old.

Anyway you are quite wrong about not paying the extra if a firm has made a mistake.

If any firm has made a mistake in billing they have up to 6 years to claim the extra payment if they have undercharged - in the same way if they have overcharged you can claim.

In the case of gas/electricity firms the BIG 6 conform to a Code(not a law) that if they have wrongly billed, and it is their fault, they will only claim back for 12 months from when the error was discovered.

e.g. If the firm had been undercharging you £500 a year for 3 years, you would only have to repay £500 not £1,500.
