Cash for cans?

Does anyone have any experience of recycling cans?
Aluminium cans are relatively valuable rubbish, and there are places you can take them to be weighed in and get paid cash.
I did this years ago, and to be honest, it was hardly worth the petrol then. I got the impression these recycling places wanted you to feel you were saving the planet and that should have been reward enough (it wasn't for me!).
But metal prices have risen - are these recycling places paying more money now?
Or are there any scrap merchants who buy cans, and are they upfront about how much they pay for them?
What's the going rate?

All scrap yards will buy Ali cans, just phone up for a price per kilo, best to squash them.0 -
Up to about £900 per ton

so, around 90p per kilo, at trade prices, scrapmerchants probably pay around half this fee.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Thanks, Plumb1 and CIS !0

if you visit the Think Cans website it's got a lot of good info on there - why not try to get together with some other MSE'rs in your area to see if tis worth clubbing together etc

If you sat in your car at a can recycling bin and asked/took the aluminium cans from other people, would you be stealing? Soon build up a healthy cash amount by doing that wouldn't you?Don't buy the Sun.0
