Hi all,
I really appreciate your support, my pc does not have an ethernet hole it only has the standard telephone type hole which will only fit in a telephone type connection, apart from that there is no way of linking the router to my pc unless by a standard telephone type cable.0 -
You cant use the telephone cable. You can buy an ethernet card from https://www.ebuyer.com for about £3.
Don't you have a laptop as well, with an ethernet port?
If so, continue to use the usb modem on the normal PC (so that you can surf and read this while setting up the router), and plug the ethernet cable into the laptop.
do a start run cmd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
on the laptop, then go into internet explorer and enter http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar. Hopefully a config screen should come up , login (not sure of the id and password, it should be in the instructions, try admin and no password).
Then enter your aol username, and aol password and save.
then take the phone line out of the usb modem, and plug it into the router. reset the router, and see if you can get to google on the laptopEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Did you get a wireless 'dongle' with the router?Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......0 -
Hi Guys,
With my router I got a USB wireless thingy, as far as what you said albertross, I do have an ethernet port on my laptop, but I do not have any connection between my normal pc and the router, so I do not know how they will link if I leave everything plugged in with my router.

you can set it up using your laptop hard wired, then use the in built wireless card in the laptop (if it has one), then use the dongle on the desktop, or spend £3 and hard wire the desktop.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Hi Coppers,
This thread seemed to run out of steam and I'm not sure if you resolved your problem. I came across this link which gives a comprehensive review and some good advice about setting up a 3com router. It may not be the exact same model as yours but generally most seem to run along the same lines.
