I have not downloaded or uploaded or any-loaded (soz, not technical at all!) any new things, but everytime I switch on my computer, the mouse and keyboard are not responding on the screen.

I do not get an error message, nor any error tones, but I can type/click away with nothing responding on screen-mind you, the speakers also are not recognised so I also wouldn't know if there was one either!

They do respond again if I unplug and replug all the USB ports but I am a bit fed up with doing this every day!

I do have virus protection (AVG 8.5.285) on my computer which scans daily and always shows up nothing there. I've been using it for about a month and its been fine. And if it makes any difference, the computer and all the acessorise are from Dell (so useless help and service then- they told me the only thing I could do was to wipe and reboot the whole hard drive!) and I have Vista 32 bit.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yeah unfortunately that seems to be the advice of most suppliers. I'm not much of a techie either but if it responds after replugging I would presume its not a virus, so not sure what good rebooting will do.

But if you have had your computer a while, a re-boot in general could do a world of good, I do mine every couple of months. Over time you forget just how faster it runs when drive is empty. Good luck sorting the problem.

Would you say youve had these problems ever since you upgraded to AVG 8.5?

    Hi,

Well I have only had AVG for a few weeks- got it the beginning of March, but all reports say everyting is fine, so am not sure its avg doing anything- would I not get some warning?

I have rebooted each and everytime I have had a problem before at the request of Dell, counting 4 times in 2 years, last one 14th of march this year. I am reluctant to reboot again as I spent the best part of two days (hours and hours) getting all the windows updates back on my computer. Its the same everytime and would rather not have to go through that all over again! But thanks for the suggestion!

You wouldnt get any warnings no

Im asking if the 2 relate though?

AVG 8.0 was notorious for all sorts of problems when it was released and its looking like 8.5 might be even worse

I would agree with alienrik I know agv sometimes does block periferals if it does a system scan try plugging in another keyboard maybe a usb one! if you get get any control over the system remove agv for the time being or try starting in safemode and see if there working.
  • The problem sounds like the USB controller is hanging for some reason. One way to check is the Event Viewer. This can be found under Computer Management part of the settings->control panel. Check the System log for any notifications. These would be obvious from the symbols used.
