Ideas for a baby shower ... PLEASE HELP?

Hi, I have decided to throw myself into the deep end and arrange a baby shower for my best friend, having never been to one before this is going to prove quite a challenge. I am thinking about arranging it to take place at her house as a surprise and asking every person to bring a gift and some nibbles, please can anyone give me ideas of things I should do to make this the best baby shower for my bestest friend. Thanks ever so much!

Ive never been to one as it is more an american thing i think.I know when i left work to have my kids my friends there gave me gifts then, other friends bought gifts when the baby arrived. Maybe people would feel like they would haveto give 2 gifts, 1 at the shower and then one at the birth time. Perhaps its best to wait until baby is born, then perhaps arrange something small at your house, then the new mum hasnt got the tidying up to do.

    Don't Say "Baby" Shower Game

This game is simple, but a lot of fun!

When each guest arrives, give her a clothes peg to attach to her clothes. Be sure to use clothes pegs that are smooth and won’t snag clothing.

When the shower begins tell the guests that they aren’t allowed to say the word “Baby.”

If a guest is caught saying “Baby,” she has to forfeit her clothes peg to the person who caught her. That person then attaches the clothes peg to her clothing.

When guests have no clothes pegs left, they are out of the game. The guest who collects the most clothes pegs is the winner.

    Dirty Diapers Baby Shower Games

Here is the basic version of how you play it.

On the day of the shower, fold paper napkins to look like diapers. Spread chocolate and mustard on one napkin to make it resemble a dirty diaper.

Fasten the “diapers” with a diaper pin and fasten them to the bottom of the guest’s chairs.

Near the end of the shower, or just before mom opens her gifts, have the guests retrieve the napkins. The guest that gets the dirty diaper wins a prize.

    Baby Shower Game

Use the following phrases to make up a game. Have the guests write the answer to the phrase opposite it:

    1. Young shepherdess who looses something.
    2. A girl that took her pet to school.
    3. Little boy who sleeps in unusual places.
    4. An animal that has gifts for the master, dame and a little boy.
    5. Child who steals swine.
    6. An old lady with a lot of children.
    7. Someone who had a wife he couldn’t keep.
    8. Birds who sang in an unusual place.
    9. The old woman who couldn’t find anything for her canine to eat.
    10. He kissed girls.
    11. He was a merry old soul
    12. They’re made of snakes and snails and puppy dog’s tails.
    13. They’re made of sugar and spice and everything nice.
    14. He lives on Drury Lane.
    15. He gets up when babies go to bed.

These are the answers to the above phrases.

    1. Little Bo Peep
    2. Mary Had a Little Lamb
    3. Little Boy Blue
    4. Baa Baa Black Sheep
    5. Tom, Tom the Piper’s Son
    6. There Was an Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe
    7. Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater
    8. Sing a Song of Sixpence
    9. Old Mother Hubbard
    10. Georgie Porgie
    11. Old King Cole
    12. Little Boys
    13. Little Girls
    14. The Muffin Man
    15. The Man in the Moon

Some people will be able to answer a few of these immediately and others won’t remember the details. This is a great way to remind your guests of the rhymes of their childhood. Set an egg timer for five minutes when the game begins. When the timer goes off, read the answers. The guest with the most correct answer gets a prize. This could be a pie to represent the Sing a Song of Sixpence rhyme or a white, stuffed goose to represent Mother Goose

I've been to two baby showers recently and at one, what they did was got plain white bibs and fabric pens. They got everyone to pair up and decorate / draw on the bibs. Mother-to-be had to pick out her favourite bib, which they put in a pre-decorated box frame for her to keep and she got to keep the rest of the bibs for baby. All the has to do is iron the bibs when she gets home to set the colour.

I also made mum-to-be a nappy cake which a sock monkey on-top, which everyone wowed about. It really did go down well.

This is my second pregnancy and I would like a baby shower this time, which my friend is organising. I think its a great wa to get everyone together as I dont get out much these evenings, if anything because I am just so tired!

I was thinking of having i ocmbiend with an evening bbq, but think that will get quite expensive, though may have one later in the evening for the family.

What day/time are you thinking of having yours on? I was thinking a sunday afternoon?

Really like the plain bibs ideas, though I think I will get 1 as I would like to put other things around the frame like tags, papers and photos, or to put it all in a special book. I didnt have one with my DD so dont want her to feel left out.

Q -Do you have other kids to your baby shower or women only?I dont know to have my DD there. I dont think its very fair for her to see the baby getting all the presents, and I dont want other people to feel they have to buy 2 presents!

    Any ideas for favours?

How about some cupcakes iced with pale pink/blue/lemon icing?

Have a camera at the ready, could maybe present the mum-to-be with a photobook to put the photos in once printed.

Love the idea of decorating bibs!

    Have a great time x
