That's what I told him-I guess he now feels that with it uninstalled, he won't be tempted. Will remove bitcomet.
Anything showing up still on the last Combofix and HJT logs please?No free lunch, and no free laptop

theres that much stuff running ill hold my hand up and say im struggling identifying some of it
As we know the restore points are clean id suggest running a restore to see if that fixes the net
If not ~ i assume you have access to another computer so we could download programs onto a usb widget or wotnot?:idea:0 -
He said earlier today he still couldn't manually set a restore point, though Combofix indicates that it could, according to the last log. I've asked him to try again.
If we restore, won't that revert him to an infected state though?
Yes, he has another PC so can install via USB stick etc.
Suggested he runs CCleaner after all the other removals to tidy thing up, and then Avira again-can't do any harm.
Then worth getting another HJT log?No free lunch, and no free laptop

Id say priority is getting the net working
No harm in any of what you ask:idea:0 -
Just a thought but has he had a look at the settings for IE? - tools / internet options then connections tab?
I've just fixed a friends laptop and something had hijacked the settings in IE and she had stuff in the proxy server fields which were preventing connection?It's easier to get forgiveness than to ask permission

Here is the latest HJT log and his comments on the remaining problems. Really not sure where to go from here:
The error message that comes up when i'm trying to connect is:
"Component GUID: {7071ECA3-663B-4BC1-A1FA-B97F3B917C55}
Component file: [C:\Windows\system32\connect.dll}
Error: (0x8007277B) < The error message could not be found>.
Additional info:
Failed to detect Internet connectivity"
And when I place my cursor over the internet connection box in the bottom right corner it says:
"Connection status: Unknown
The dependancy service or group failed to start"
I deleted what I hope to be the BitComet. The other problems I have excluding the internet are; after logging in I have to wait a much longer time for it too start and the screen goes white for a few minutes before I actually get on. And I also get these error messages:
"Acer eNet Tray has stopped working"
"Acer Empowering Technology Framework Launcher has stopped working"
"Failed to connect to windows service"
The right sidebar has all its functions (like a clock and picture slideshow) not working, just small white boxes instead, although i'm not too bothered about that.
I tried the Defragmenter a couple of times, then restarted and tried one more time, but after double click on it and I click continue to the "needs my permission" box, nothing happens. I ran CCleaner with no problems and I am now running a full Avira scan. Here is the Hijack This log:

Technically speaking ~ the computer should run fine without any of the acer software running
Id open CCLEANER and goto TOOLS and STARTUP and remove those 2 entries from starting up
on the OTHER computer. Download the following ~
Download SUPERANTISPYWARE (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/
Dr Webs CURE IT
http://www.freedrweb.com/
LSP FIX
Download HostsXpert
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Security-Related/Hoster.shtml
Install SAS and UPDATE and PERFORM COMPLETE SCAN
(Then goto console and LOGS and post the log it created then untick it from STARTING UP WITH WINDOWS)
Install DRWEBS CURE IT and run it. It will auto QUICK scan
After that set to run a FULL scan
Run LSPFIX
Install HostsXpert
and then follow the below steps.
* Unzip HostsXpert.zip
* It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
* Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
* click the Make Writeable? button.
* click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
* Click the X to exit the program:idea:0 -
RIK, just to let you know the latest from my friend (below): the only frustrating thing is that I'm not quite cleaer which one it was that did the trick-but it appears to be sorted. Many thanks-I owe you a virtual pint.
SAS didn't pick anything up, although Dr Webs cure it picked up 3 data files in an acer folder and LSP FIX (no problems found) and HostsXpert ran fine, then I restarted the laptop and bingo! anything was working again (hopefully), I don't get any error messages, sidebar is working and the Acer toolbar is there and working. I couldn't see any immediate problems.
The internet was working, so I've updated Avira, malwarebytes and spybot.No free lunch, and no free laptop
