Barclaycard Minimum Payment - Can't pay 57p!

Hi

I have an unusual problem I have not come across before. I have a Barclaycard Platinum and have always made payments on-line with a debit card. My latest statement balance was 57 pence, which was trailing interest from the previous month.

I attempted to pay in my usual way but it would not accept the amount. There is nothing I could find on the site to say there was a minimum payment figure. It would not allow me to overpay either, e.g £1.00, as it said my account could not go into credit.

Not only do I resent paying for a stamp or for a phone call to make a 57p payment, there is also the issue that these methods take longer than internet payments, which is the fastest method. Eventually I have settled on sending a payment from my current account, which also had to be £1 minimum, but again I am not certain of the time delay and may incur a late payment charge of £12 or whatever it is. For 57p!

I had e-mailed customer services with my query about not being able to make payment etc. and received a standardised response telling me there are many ways to pay, such as over the internet, by post or phone and so on. Clearly nobody actually read my e-mail.

I would like to know if anybody else has had this problem, and how you dealt with it if you did indeed get a late payment charge. I think as I intended and attempted to pay on time, and e-mailed my problem without getting a satisfactory response, they would be more than harsh to penalise me? If I am charged for this and they do not refund it I will close the account without hesitation.

Unless their system ignores balances less than a cretain amount, and your £1 payment doesn't reach them in time, then I guess you will be chargesd automatically.

Having said that, common sense would tell them to refund it without question. My advice is not to go in guns blazing from the off. Be reasonable at first and I am sure you will get the desired result.

I had a 60 odd pence balance on my MINT card once and they wrote it off!

I posted on here about it at the time because I was surprised but apparently all RBS cards do this

Regarding the OP's predicament, I'd have done the same thing, pay it by BACS.

Is there a Barclays Bank within striking distance?
I normally pay online, but when I owed tuppence on my Abbey credit card, I went to the nearest branch and paid over the counter.

If you incur a late payment charge, I'd call and request a refund. If you ring Barclaycard Card Services on 0800 068 4899 and hold, then select 0 from the menu to speak to an adviser, you'll avoid the overseas call centre and the perishing 0870 numbers ;)

I recently encountered the very same problem with my b/c.
I was somewhat miffed at not being able to settle this online (either via Barclaycard online payment or online banking bill payment) due to minimum transaction values .... so I wrote a cheque instead. Make it nice and cheap for them to process ;)

I was in town so paid this over the counter at Barclays.

Prior to the online banking days however, rather than putting a stamp on the envelope to Barclaycard to pay the bills, I just used to put the payment slip & cheque into an envelope and drop it through the letterbox of the Barclays branch I walked past on the way to work. I think I just used to write 'counter service' on the outside to at least give some indication it was not just a letter for the manager etc. Never had a problem with this & all payments went though.

You don't have a direct debit set up to pay the minimum payment? That's even quicker than a standing order/payment set up on the internet, waits until the latest date before going to your card, and guarantees that you won't get late payment charges.
