Car Insurance claims without the LEGAL COVER

My partner was involved in a car accident a couple of weeks ago and the other driver admitted liability. Their insurance company are paying for the repair to our vehicle which is going to take about a month, and my insurance company have provided a courtesy car for the duration. However my partner was off work for approx a week due to injuries and will now have loss of earnings as his company do not pay sick pay.

We did not take out the legal cover with our insurane but we were Fully Comprehensive. Our insurance company put us in touch with a firm of solicitors who have said we can claim for loss of earnings etc with a CFA (Conditional Fee Agreement). Can anyone recommend this, as the agreement we have been given to sign sounds really complicated? Would we be liable for any costs with a CFA? Can anyone recommend any other process for recovering losses where legal cover wasn't taken with the insurance policy? Thanks
