Compost bins

Hiya all been lurking on this thread for a while now picking up tips etc...... got a quick question for you all. I was wondering if it was good to have a compost bin even though i only have a small back yard...... I read i can build a small box of compost to sit it on...... do they smell badly? having it so close to the house i do worry. I wanna do my bit for the environment and the amount of things we throw away that could be composted is unbelievable. My mum has two in her allotment and i reckon if i started one she would love to have the excess compost that i couldnt use.

We used to have a very small garden and used our compost bin regularly. It is often possible to get ones subsidised by the local council which looks like a dustbin and because of the lid it reduces the smell.

Now we have a bigger garden we have a couple of them and it is great being able to create your own compost.

we also have 2 compost bins but they are round the side of the house away from any doors or windows. The smell is not a problem but flies can be in the summer. These are mostly small i think they may be fruit flies but they can invade the house. However the compost you get is fantastic.
