Options
Please can you advise me what to do. We have a new psp 3000 and have been trying to connect it to the internet. We have a netgear wireless router and i have done all the 'bits' that the psp screen says and then after scanning...connection to access point.....exchanging key information please wait ....a connection error has occurred.the connection to the access point timed out.

I have been trying this on and off all day with still the same eror message.

Please can anyone advise me in user friendly terms what to do.

Have you tried the basics ~ switching off both the psp and the router/modem. Power up the modem (if seperate) wait for it to settle then power up the router, wait for it to settle then power up the psp and try again

I assume its a WPA security and you know the passkey yes?

sounds like an encryption issue to me.

on a computer thats connected to the router, type https://www.routerlogin.com (or 192.168.0.1) into where you usually put website addresses. the defualt username & password for the router is admin (username) and password (for the password). once you have logged into the router, click on wireless settings and in the middle column at the bottom, there should be a security key. type the key letter for letter (its case sensitive as well) into the PSP and try again
  • i have been to that router web site as below and entered in the 'key'....trying to connect with the psp still. Now the error on psp says:

A CONNECTION ERROR HAS OCCURRED, THE WLAN SWITCH ON THE PSP SYSTEM IS NOT TURNED ON.

I am not sure what the wlan switch is or where it is so the journey continues!! Any further help would be most appreciated. Thanks

on the original psp-1000 its on the left hand side of the console by the analogue stick.

on the psp-2000/psp-3000 i think it it on the top of the console but i'm not 100% sure as i only have a psp-1000

I had encryption issues with my netgear router and a ps3 - I had WPA encryption which everything else hooked up to ok, but there was always an error when trying to connect the PS3. Maybe your PSP has similar issues. I tested mine by temporarily turning encryption off to see if it would connect then and then changed security type to WEP. However I think also, that the latest firmware release for my router (DG834v3) included a patch to allow connection with a PS3 under WPA. So my advice would be:

Turn off any encryption, and see if you can connect to the router then.
Try updating the firmware on your router (pretty straight forward)
Try using a different type of encryption

Also if it says WLAN switch isnt turned on, then thats a setting or switch on the PSP unit.

i had exactly the same issue with my ps3 - a firmware upgrade solved it.

it may be worth doing a firmware upgrade on the psp
  • Do I need to do a firmware upgrade on the psp 3000?
How/where do I turn the encryption off...

At least the psp3000 can get online as I took it back to the shop and the chap in the shop was able to get the dam thing doing what is should be......typical!!

Please continue to guide me if you can..thanks

just another thought - login to the router (as explained above) > click wireless settings > click the button next to Wireless Station Access List > make sure there isnt a tick in the box next to Turn Access Control On. if there is, untick it and press apply (at the bottom of the page).
  • There was no tick in the box as per last instructions .

As the error message is refering to 'timing out' is there anything else I need to check...need to do....

Spent money on the thing and would really like it to be working online too!!

Within the netgear control panel (type in 192.168.0.1 in your web browser) there is a section on the left for wireless settings. Firstly - if you have aseveral devices that use the router then make a note of the security settings (encryption type and the passkey) as it makes it easier to put things back later on without having to reconfigure several devices. Try disabling security options and apply - also ensure SSID is broadcasting. Then try and connect again with your psp 3000. Also when you disable your PC might lose connection, because its trying to connect with security settings that are now different - set up a new wireless connection through windows if needs be.

If it works then there's a problem with your PSP connecting via the encryption type you previously used. If so, try and get a firmware upgrade for the PSP and install. Also get the suitable firmware upgrade for the netgear router, as NG had a fix for the PS3 issue in their latest release notes, so it could be a router firmware issue. Once done, try changing your security settings on your router back to what they were, then try with the PSP again. If it still doesnt work, try another encryption type (WPA, WEP) and see if its successful on those. Always ensure you make a note of any new passkey! Otherwise you will not be able to reconnect your PC to the router unless you use an ethernet cable.

p.s. f you find another type of encryption works, then you will need to change any other device's wireless settings to match.
