you don't need to 'split' the data in any complicated way at all.....

It was my tutor who mentioned this .... I'm a little worried I have misunderstood or something - god I'll be glad when this is over....

you define a variable that defines the groups..... you just call it 'group' and then make 1 = control and 2 = intevention (change it in the variable view). then you put the number in for whatever group the person was in..... so in total you only need 3 columns per person for the anova - group allocation, overall first score and overall second score (perhaps an extra column for participant number). you don't need to 'split' the data in any complicated way at all.....

in your position i would have two separate spss files - one with all 140 and one with the 80 for the anova - it's just less confusing.

this isn't very complicated to set up....

Sorry are we still talking Repeated measures here ...?

I'm sorry but I just cant get it to let me set up anything to conpare the groups in terms of the impact (measure).

Within subjects factor box named Group - factors 2
I define the variables Impacct before and after

This means I am not conparing them as groups.

I have tried to put the defining variable from data entry into the Between Groups and the analysis failed. I have tried to put it into the defined box and "STRING VARIABLES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THIS LIST".

I've tried and tried ... I've been here since god knows what time this morning trying to get this done and it just wont give me the option to separate on groups so that I can conpare on impact score before and after. My tutor has taken all of the hols off and Method support sessions are off too. I found an SPSS forum where I posted a quesry and got no response.

I am getting more and more stressed and its not at all that I am stupid or that I dont know what I am doing but that the options to that should be there are not. I have taken all day today off from revision and achieved precisely nothing .... again.

Well I was absolutely sure I had it right this time ....

    this is the output.....

"The WITHIN SUBJECTS FACTOR NAME "GROUP" IS INVALID. THE NAME SHOULD BE A SHORT STRING, DIFFERENT FROM ALL THE VARIABLES NAMES. THE COMMAND IS NOT EXECUTED."

This was when I put the group in the between subjects. Impact scrores before and after as the defined above.

Any help at all would be appreciated. I am desperate now.

this is a very simple repeated measures ANOVA with a between groups condition as well. apart from actually saying what buttons in spss to click, i genuinely don't know what else to say (apart from if it tells you 'group' is an invalid name change it to something else and run it again and see what happens!). the andy field textbook should do that. i'm uncomfortable giving any more help as this should be manageable for a third year project and having supervised final year projects, this level of help with analysis is a little too far. good luck though.

Thanks. I knew what I wanted to do ... but I needed someone to tell me/confirm it. As I had done it over and over and over again and was getting no where with it as the output was coming out blank or full of error messages.

I realised last night what I have done (called both groups "group" in attempting to run it numberous times, think I must bedoing it wrong). I interpereted them this morning and have written it up. I have also changed all the variable so that they start as 0 and that increasing numbers = more. Its all starting to make sense AND I have a signifigant effect too!!
