Sixty years ago on the 21st April I was called up for my National Service.
Ten weeks training including my driving test and I was posted Germany for the remainder of my two years.
Different place then, what with the Berlin air lift, the cold war and the war itself had only been over for four years.
I wish you well and would love to do my time over again.
The German people we found to be very nice in general.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
We are in Elmpt, there are 2 camps within 20 mins of each other JHQ is huge! Our camp is quite small, but ok. We are 5 mins from the Dutch border wich is good because on a sunday in Germany EVERYTHING is shut! Holland is all open.
Quarters I find are not too bad, we have a 2 bed, our bedroom is massive but the 2nd one is tiny and we have a huge cellar.
Hope you find it ok x0 -

Nearly all towns in holland are shut on a sunday aswell, the big towns take it in turn to have sunday shop opening, but everything is shut in holland aswell, not just Germany.0 -
Firstly, Paderborn was fab for us. Make sure you go to La Pampa Argentinian Steak restaurant, we miss it soooo much.:D
It'll take a bit of getting used to but you'll enjoy it. Social life is great as everyone is in the same boat so weekend barbecues and beers are a must!!
The weather gets extremely hot in the summer, topped 40 degrees when we were there so be prepared!
Sundays everything closes except the NAAFI. Germans frown upon anyone doing anything on a Sunday like mowing grass and hanging washing out as Paderborn is a very religious town.
Get out and about and have fun!!:TLife is a rollercoaster.....ya just gotta ride it:whistle:0
