Eye Surgery - refund?

A friend of mine had eye surgery costing almost £2000. A few months on and her eyes have deteriorated almost back to how they were before.

She's gone back to the clinic and they've said the only option is to redo the surgery. It took a lot of courage for her to do it in the first place, and isn't keen on going back. She asked them for a refund to put towards contact lenses again, but they've said no.

Is this right?

Yes - but still... she's not thrilled about the idea of having done it again.

They might it quite clear it doesn't always work! A friend of mine had to go back and have one eye done again (which they did for free).

Your friend would be a muppet not to go and have it done again if they're offering to do it for free!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

my grandad had his eyes done recently so i have read the terms and conditions the clinic gave him (maybe a diff company) but it does state that the surgery may not be perfect and may have to be redone at the clinics cost, but you have to sign to say that you accept this. To be fair they are offering her the only thing she can expect x

  • I enquired once at my optician. he said I could have the surgery, but for my eyesight, it would be a complete waste of time, as I would still need glasses!

Perhaps these farms and laser peoplese are more interested in money, then the cure from eye defects.

It is a risk you take with eye surgery whether it is carried out in a private clinic or in an eye hospital, the ops don't always work.

If they have offered to re-do the eye then she should have it done - if she reads her paperwork then she will see that there are risks and she accepted that when she had the work done in the first place.

I had heard it is possible for the eyes to return to their previous state, obviously everyone is different.

I find it quite offensive that the clinc can rely on the small print of a contract concerning risks when somthing of a medical nature ought to be part of the consultation. Is there some professional organisation or other regulator that could perhaps offer further advice?

It's a known risk-they've offered to do it again.what more could they have done, they're not miracle workers.

Totally agree. Surely the most important thing is that the eyes are corrected rather than a refund!
  • Is she just shortsighted or does she have other problems? This happened to me (I also had ghosting and starbursts) and personally I didn't go back, I went instead to Moorfields Eye Hospital and they fixed everything with Wavefront. Wavefront was new at the time and not available from the original place, but my eyes wouldn't have been fixed without it.
