Dabs.com rip-off

Hi,

New to this so I hope I'm in the right place.

I recently bought a new mouse for my wife's lap-top from Dabs. As I live on the Isle of Man I find it easier than trying to find stuff like that over here and cheaper. But not in this case.

The item cost £11.58. The invoice and confirmation e-mail said postage was £4.98. My bank statement said they had taken £28.58! £17 MORE than then the cost of the item.

On reading the Dabs site I find that they charge £11.50 to deliver to the Isle of Man on top of the usual delivery charges. As this item came Royal Mail normal delivery, that is blatant robbery. Add this to the fact neither the original invoice or confirmation e-mail mentioned this, I think this is a rip-off and I certainly will not ne using these crooks again. It is also darn near impossible to contact this outfit as they operate a "no telephone" policy. I can see why!

Anyway, if anyone else has any thoughts on this, I'd be interested to hear.

Andy

..err seeing that you live on the Isle of man if it says this on the site wouldn't it have been a good idea to have checked this before entering into a contract with them?

It should have said before you confirmed the order that it would cost this much! Ie in the terms and conditions and also before you clicked confirm order - where you see a breakdown of the costs!

Have you spoken to them or been in contact with them to see what they say? Though to be honest I dont think there is much you can do as the previous poster says it does say on its website the charge for delivery to the IofM (which does sound like a rip off!)

Its the same for Northern Ireland. Dabs do some great prices but then we have to add about £20 P&P which makes them uncompetitive (if you do a bit of shopping around). Many times I have gone to order from Dabs or eBuyer only to find out that the P&P means I can get it cheaper locally (often through PC World .. and that is saying something).

  • I bought from dabs for the first time, delivery was prompt, but expensive, then i needed to return the item and using thier courier it's £10 to return it! Sent it through my office courier, cost me £4.

I won't be using them again, their returns policy and lack of telephones puts me off now.

I find it very annoying with companies like dabs.com over postage prices to places outside mainland uk, especially when they use royal mail as their delivery method.

RM charges the same price to send goods to Jersey as it does for the rest of the UK, yet some companies are cheeky enough to charge extra. How is this extra charge justified? I can't seem to find the answer to that, anyone had any luck?

As others have said you do need to check what you agreed.

However, the IoM surchage I would expect to apply to a private courrier. This could be a glitch in Dabs software.

You could contact their local trading standards office.

I switched to Misco (https://www.misco.co.uk) who have similar pricing to Dabs with the added bonus of taking Amex and also being on Quidco and Greasy Palm. They appear to operate a flat rate for offshore packages so might not be cheap for mice but could be useful for more expensive items. They use courier for mainland delivery so I guess they would use similar for offshore (not Royal Mail).

Offshore** £15.00 (ex VAT) £17.63 (inc VAT)
