Our laptop broke on Sunday (the screen colour completely went and even though it was on you couldnt see anything). We bought a new PC yesterday but is there anyway we can transfer the information from the laptop onto the pc? Things like our word documents/emails etc?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

yes....just connect the two with an Ethernet cable, and you should be able to find the lappy's info via the "network" you've just created..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Yes. On laptops there should be a monitor connection:

Looks like the bottom one. Plus monitor onto that, turn laptop on, you should get a signal.
On laptop there should be an FN button (usually next to alt at the bottom), and also in the F keys (F1 F2 etc.) there should be a CRT/LCD thing, should match the colour of the FN key (usually purple). Once laptop is switched on, press FN + That F key. The output will then go to the monitor so you can see what you are doing. You can then put stuff on disk or pendrive.
Try gunjacks first but I doubt you will have everything set up for accessing.0 -
easiest way might be to remove the hard drive from the lappy and attach it to the PC..then just copy the data across.
If it is a relatively new lappy the sata drive will be easy to move into a desktop PC (just requires a spare SATA cable..possibly using the one from the dvd drive) but if the lappy has an IDE drive an adapter will be required...I think about £5 from a PC shop (not pcworld).
Plan B (maybe it should have been plan a?) attach a monitor to the lappy and see if it is actually working..if it is..copy the data to cd/dvd/usb drive and move across...)Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

Connect the two with a crossover Ethernet cable.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Thanks everyone. Will give it a go0

I personally would plug the new screen into the laptop and then create backup discs which you then run on the new computer. seems a lot easier than removing hard drives, its unlikely you will have a crossover ethernet cable and you really wouldnt need to go to that much trouble“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”0

I would try plugging in a new monitor into the laptop, then you can setup your network on the laptop, and transfer all your data using an ethernet cable from the laptop to the desktopJames0

You will need to get a screen attached first, as you will need to manipulate the data from the laptop. If you want to copy emails for instance, are you using outlook? Then you will need to backup your mailbox etc
The next action is how to transfer the data. This can be done via media (CD), physically connect the hard disk from the laptop to your PC in some way (USB or physically plug in the drive). Or connect the two systems together as mentioned above via a cable, and access remotely your files. The last option is for very large amounts of data. If you only have less than 700Mb of data, then the CD option is the best.0 -
Whip the hardrive out of the laptop and drop it into a USB cradle. About a tenner from local PC shop.0
