Old steel water tanks in the loft..

I've got 2 old steel water tanks in my loft taking up much needed space and would like them removed.I think they are the original ones from when the house was first built!!
These weigh a ton and are too big to come through the hatch.
How could I get them out?Seems the only way is to cut them into pieces with some sort of saw?
Or does anyone know of any other method!
Cheers

i've got the same problem. no contractor seems to want to do this job as part of installing a combi boiler. now i have 2 tanks like that in 2 homes and am just ignoring them. even if i could lift them they will not fit through my hatches.
sorry, i can only sympathize. i assume that it will take a lot of messy time with a saw and is a big job.0 -
hi
you could put the smaller one inside the bigger one and move them to the far end of your loft and put some boards over the top for storage space.
or cutting them with a grinder down the corners and folding them flat.
worth a trynothing scares me.....ive got kids0 -
i was only thinking about this last night, when i was trying to get off to sleep. i have the same problem, and am loathe to try a grinder for fear of setting the loft alight! thought i'd move the tank to one side in the loft, and use it to store all the bits and bobs i want to car boot in a couple of months time.
i know its not a perfect solution, but at least it looks as if its there for a purpose.

I'd be careful trying to cut it - don't use power tools as lofts are normally dusty places and could go up like a tinderbox from a spark.
Have you tried contacting a scrap metal dealer to see if they'll take it off your hands? They may do it for nothing to get the scrap - just an idea!!Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0 -

I cut one up with an angle grinder. Horrible job, and the fire warnings are wise. Have someone else up there with a fire extinguisher.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

i cut mine up with jigsaw lot easier than i expected just take your time and use a good quality blade used just two blades to cut my large tank in to 4 and watch out for chippings as they can be hot you can get cheap jigsaws for £10 or so0

They're quite nice as planters outside - sort of industrial look!Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

Hi
It might be easier to enlarge the loft access. At least that's only plaster & wood, and the easier access would be a future benefit.0 -
I enlarged my loft hatch, which was then big enough to remove one of the tanks but not both of them! I put two doors in, hinged at opposite ends. One opens downwards with the ladder above it, and the other opens upwards, with the first hatch latching closed against it. Careful placement of draught excluder was necessary!Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0
