Can I carry glass in my hand luggage?

I've been searching the net trying to find a definate answer to this - but with no luck.
I need to carry an oil lamp to France safely. It's similar to this (in that it's got a glass top and bottom) - http://www.bargainjohn.com/images/G100/G175BLamp.jpg . Do you think I will be allowed to take it on a bmibaby flight?

This is from the bmibaby website:
"banned baggage
Under no circumstances will bmibaby carry firearms either on board or as checked baggage.
In addition to the list of dangerous items prohibited for carriage in baggage, the UK Department of Transport, Local Government and Regions (DTLR) has prohibited the following articles from being carried onboard as cabin baggage: Toy or replica guns (plastic or metal), catapults, household cutlery, knives with blades of any length, paper knives, razor blades, tradesmens tools, darts, scissors, tweezers, hypodermic syringes (unless a genuine medical need can be proven), knitting needles, sporting bats, billiard, snooker or pool cues."
... don't say nuffink about glass lamps!
If you want to make sure, give them a quick call on 0871 224 0224. Even though it's in hand luggage still make sure you wrap it well to guard against breakage. Have a nice time in France!0 -
That's what I thought. The line was closed earlier but when I rang the airport, they said that glass bottles were OK - but that they couldn't say for sure.
It is a bit crazy being allowed to take glass on, it's muchmore dangerous than half of the things they've listed. While I was googling, I found an MEP who wants to ban glass bottles...0 -
If they do allow it you'll need to disassenble and pack into a handluggage sized bag.
If they say it's ok I'd try and get it in writing (or email), as it might save you porblems as the airport.0 -
They allow you to take duty free alcohol purchases in glass bottles as hand luggage, so I do not see what the problem would be with an oil lamp.[size=-2] If this post was unhelpful, please tell me.

... without the oil !0 -
i would just wrap it up in half a ton of bubble wrap, stick it in your hand luggage and don't say anything.0

The only restriction on bottles I know of is that they should not be in the overhead locker so presumeably the same applies to glass of any type. What about the oil? There are certainly restrictions on carrying flammable liquids so if the lamp has been used I'd make sure it doesn't smell of oil.0

I think I'm just going to wait three months or so for them to come over in their car. It's no real loss.
Thanks for your help though0 -
I think it's over 2 years ago now, but it was high security alert, and we had to go through security at Las Vegas. We couldn't believe it that nail scissors were dangerous when someone went through without comment with one of those 'yard of ale' glasses.
For it to arrive safely, I'd wait until it comes over in the car. Overhead lockers are quite often crammed in, so someone trying to squeeze something extra in could easily break it.
Hope you get it home safely.0 -
As others have said, the glass isn't the problem - although you risk it getting broken.
The concern would be the oil it does or has contained. Obviously, the lamp with oil would be a complete non-starter as it's designed to be flammable! However, other fuel products (eg chainsaw) must be accompanied by a letter from the manufacturer to guarantee that the device has never been used! The danger here is a buildup of fumes in a near-sealed container, which may or may not apply to your lamp.
Personally, I wouldn't take it but if you do, you can expect to start a few heads scratching at the airport!0
