Replacing Skirting Boards

hi all, ive just started to remove the skirting board in our living room and when i took the first piece off the plaster came off with it. i presume that this will happen all the way round the room so it would require an awful lot of filling in afterwards. is there a way i could just get some new board with a bit cut out and stick it over the top so it goes flush with the wall.
sorry if this make no sense at all.
thanks
Dave

Depending on how "tall" your skirting board is you maybe able to get a wider version that would cover over the missing plaster. I would still patch up the hole(s) first bit it doesn't have to be perfectly smooth.0

are they nailed or glued to the walls?
When you are taking the old stuff off are you separating it from the wall first? i.e. putting a flat bladed scraper down between the boards and the wall to break the join. this should help stop the plaster being pulled away with the boards.0 -
