Aircrack-ng anyone?

Currently on a learning curve with this running under Ubuntu with an Atheros card. Hardware side of things all works ok.

OK, some specifics might help here - although being that aircrack is designed to "crack" wireless encryption, I'm not sure this forum is the best place to ask for advice. try http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=tutorial

A word of caution:
I don't know why you would want to use aircrack except to break-in to another wireless network & use it (perhaps to avoid paying). I am not a lawyer but I'm sure this is fraudulent. I do not wish to discuss your reasons for using aircrack, nor do I encourage you to discuss them here; I am merely making an observation

OK can we maybe leave aside the reasons for using aircrack-ng ? we all know the score. I am interested merely becuase i am inquisitive, I'm running Linux at present ,and i am always willing to learn new tricks. I dont need to hack into anyones wireless network as i have my own which i pay for and i can access public wireless networks with my current agreement.

Now then,i currently have my injection working, I am running airodump and i have used aireplay to make the association. The only thing i can see being captured in airodump terminal is lots of beacons and no #data.

Do i have to use another lappy to associate with the AP to get some data flow,or else wait for the AP to be used?

My intinct is that you would need another wirleess device to access the AP in order to see any traffic. I am not an expert in the area of Wireless packet capture, but use tools such as pcap & tethereal to capture wired network packets from a switch. In this scenario, there must also be other traffic to see, so I am assuming that the technology concepts are similar

If the AP isn't being used, there's no traffic to capture, so no IVs will be captured, only beacons.

Something needs to be using the AP, so you can use another laptop, or the same laptop with a different network adapter, I'd think. Once you've captured a few valid packets, you can start injecting, and you'll get plenty of IVs in no time.
