John O Groats to Lands End

Options
In the summer of 2009 myself and my Boyfriend will be doing a sponsored journey from John O Groats to Lands End in a Road Legal Buggy. We will be doing the journey to raise money and awareness for two charities close to our hearts – Water Aid and Cancer Research. We have chosen these two charities as a few months ago I lost my grandad to cancer. You can find out more about the two charities and what the sponsorship money will be used for further on in the portfolio.

As mentioned above the journey will take place in a road legal buggy. The buggy can travel at a maximum of 30 mph meaning that we will be avoiding all motorways and sticking to the quieter roads for our safety. The buggy is fully equipped to ride on the road and costs £1400. We are buying a new buggy instead of a less expensive pre owned buggy as then it will be more reliable on the long journey. After we have done the journey we will be auctioning off the buggy and the money will be going to the two charities. The buggy can travel around 150 miles on a tank of petrol, the tank holds 12 litres and will do 60 mpg. We have worked out that the buggy will need to be refuelled 6 times. Based on petrol being a pound a litre it should cost about £70 to complete the journey, myself and my girlfriend will be paying for the petrol.

Myself and my boyfriend will be in the buggy taking it in turns to drive and driving on average around 150 miles a day. The journey from John O Groats to Lands End is approximately 1000 miles meaning it should take us 7 days. We have planned a route which we will be following but anything could happen on route so we also have IPhones with route planner on them. We will be camping over night and paying for this our self so all money raised goes straight to the charities. We have a list of camp sites along the way and also extra ones incase we go off route. Again we will have our IPhones which has internet access so we can search for other campsites if need be. We will have a support vehicle with us which is my van, this is to transport the buggy to the start of the journey, to carry extra petrol for the buggy, to carry spares for the buggy and to store the buggy over night whist camping. In the van there will be a first aider and a mechanic just incase anything goes wrong along the way! Diesel for the van will be paid for by the people in the van, again so all money raised goes to the charity.

The buggy and the van will have signs on them saying what we are doing, what charities we are raising money for and also what companies have helped us. This is to raise awareness and more sponsorship for the charities and also to promote companies that have helped us. We will be driving 1000 miles in the buggy so a lot of people will see the buggy as its very eye catching and stands out so many people will see the companies that have helped us. Aswell as this we also have a website which will thank all companies that have helped in any way and we have pages on the just giving website, this is a website which allows people to sponsor us and the money goes directly to the charities so we don’t have to deal with the money. We shall also be contacting various local newspapers and local radio stations before we travel so when we are in certain towns it will raise more publicity and hopefully more sponsorship for the event.

We have contacted Cancer Research and Water Aid and informed them of what we are doing, they are more than happy for us to do this event in aid of them and they have offered us all the support we need.

Cancer research is a leading charity dedicated to cancer research. Cancer affects more than one in three people during their life and every two minutes someone is diagnosed with cancer. Over half the people diagnosed with cancer survive, meaning that the Cancer Research charity is an important charity, more research is needed relating to cancer, its causes and treatments so that more people in the future will be able to survive cancer.

Water Aid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation. Water Aid and its partners use practical solutions to provide safe water, effective sanitation and hygiene education to the world's poorest people. They work with local communities and use a mixture of low cost technologies to deliver lasting solutions. 884 million people in the world do not have access to safe water, this accounts for approximately one in eight of the worlds population. Even more disturbing is the fact that 1.8 million children die every year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation, this amounts to around 5000 deaths a day!

As you can see from the above two paragraphs these two charities are extremely important.

We are asking if you can help in any way. We are looking for sponsorship to pay for the buggy (which will then be sold and the money will go to the charities) or just general sponsorship for doing the journey. we are also looking for free advertsing and general advice
