And I would forget page-based design, get a content management system set up and put all the text in there.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

If it's purely a CSS based menu based on ordinary <UL> items then a browser that ignores the CSS should simply display the list.
Yes, that's the graceful degradation, but IE5.5/IE6/IE7 do provide increasingly-compliant CSS support, and that's the problem -- they are buggy!
Phew -- like I said, many people have trod this path before!

Included in that thread these two pages were already mentioned (I found them via Google yesterday) and these provide a very compliant and keyboard-access-friendly mechanism. They're not so easy to copy the code though!

This is obviously "the way things are going" for many people, but is not currently an option for me, owing to the present hosting environment. Besides, if I'd gone down this route from the start I wouldn't have learned anywhere near as much about HTML and CSS.

Saying that, to set up a reasonably simple site, using a CMS can be hellishly difficult. I've recently set up essentially a 3 page site in Joomla!, and it was a nightmare to find all the bits that needed changing before I could finally get what I wanted.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

I agree, Wordpress, Joomla etc are cake to use and may even come with Cpanel free on the host. Then you can work the content and forget the code...and add many modules easily to expand the scope of the site and make it better.

Huge companies use these CMS systems ...for good reason. Anyone can go in and edit the content of their particular section...for a smaller group of part timers that alone is nice. :)
