The "Linpus" (?I Think?) OS on the Acer One's is ok for beginners who want to have a simple restricted introduction to Linux and it's and interface is nice and simple.

Ubuntu (The current fave for most people) have a version for Netbooks like the Acer Aspire One and unlike Windows it can be installed (and run) via a USB stick very easily.

Worth a read by the MS fan-klub: Microsoft: 96% of netbooks run Windows.

I don't know how sustainable Microsoft's share of the netbook market is though. Netbooks are supposed to be cheap, which is why many ship with Linux. Microsoft however, has had to literally give away its Windows OEM licences in order to compete with Linux in the netbook market. And let's not forget, Microsoft have a propensity towards bending the truth when it comes to sales figures and the like.

Assuming it'll even run on a netbook, I can't see them giving away Windows 7 licences though, and they can't keep giving away XP forever. The end result is going to be an obvious disparity in the cost of Linux netbooks and Windows netbooks.

There has always been a premium attached to buying a computer with Windows, but most consumers don't release this, instead thinking it comes "free" with the computer (one of the ways Microsoft managed to bring about their monopoly was by getting people to think "why use another OS when you get one free with your computer?").

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out in the MS fanclub though, given that they're forever harping on about silly Mac users paying extra for a computer with an Apple logo on it.

I guess they must think Windows is free or something.

Well XP is going to be a "Downgrade Option" when Win 7 Comes out(like it is with versions of Vista). So XP will still be around till at least 2011 being sold next to Win 7!...

You'll still need to pay for the Windows 7 licence though.

I use Adium for my Mac, which uses the same libpurple library as Pidgin, and it works very well.
