Still a great offer. I want to be able to tape TV programms occasionally and a mono VCR is ideal.
    Happy chappy

Just been to Tesco as Burseldon, Southampton and they don't know anything about them!

Ahem...take a look at Dixon's website, you might find that they have a selection of VCRs (costing significantly more than this one). If I recall correctly, the announcement about discontinuing VCRs was a publicity stunt.

And you thing that this BUSH VCR will survive to the day when they are no longer available??? Also if you have the technical knowhow to play your VCR on these things then you'll definitely know how to copy your videos onto DVD.

A bit of realism might be in order here. Who's going to spend hour upon hour transferring the kids' videos to DVD, when in a few years they won't have the slightest interest in them. Transferring to DVD is only worth while for the long-term stuff that's really important to you.

  • Aiadi if you don't want one why are you on this thread is it really worth making these remarks over a VCR costing next to nothing - go watch the news and find something worthy of debate - for your info i can watch play and even tape stuff off the telly but i wouldn't know where to start setting the timer (like lots of others) and i would be flummoxed with a DVD recorder so in your eyes i guess i'm a thick numpty who should only be allowed to watch analogue TV!!!

Ps my daughter is still using an amstrad VCR bought from Gateway (remember them folks) in 1985 still with original remote well worth the 129.99 i paid then had to get it on the old 0% got my moneys worth though

    Again thanks OP!

Apologies littlemissfrugal if you took my posting as suggestive of you being a thick numpty. If you look at the first part of this thread then you'll see a whole load of posters argueing against VCR probably for the purpose of dissuading others from wasting their money on dead technology.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • apology accepted - yes it is dead technology - if you have progressed to other formats/systems but millions of us haven't and are still using VCR's daily its cheap and cheerful for most of us. The original post was to inform us all of a bargain buy if i had been the OP i would be slightly miffed that my thread was then hijacked to become a technology debate making me wonder why i bothered. i am a busy working mum with 2 kids so have to tape everything to watch when and if i get a chance i have tapes everywhere - the last series of Spooks not yet watched and more besides - i truly wish i had a handle on the advances made in recent years so i could tell a machine my viewing list for the week and leave it to it but i can't so i will continue to have tapes littering the place gathering dust.

If you have young children then it's far from a dead technology. DVDs don't stand up too well to the trials and tribulations of a 3 year old. They end up scratched to bits and unplayable while video tapes are very resilient to mishandling.

Just because a technology has been overtaken does not make it dead in every context. Don't let the marketing droids convince you otherwise in their quest to sell the latest product.

In my earlier post i stated i was unable to find the thread vcr at southampton Tesco.
I needed a new vcr as my old one's broke and am not going to replace all my friends videos onto dvd.
Went into Woolworths Eastleigh this afternoon, and under the electrical counter they had 2 bush ex-display vcr's, scratched and with no remotes, advertised on a pos stating "ALL VCRS £25".
Above the counter on the shelf were 4 of these Philips vcr's, brand new, thus told the csa i'll have one of those..... scanned through at £59.99.
To cut a long story short they agreed that they had advertised all vcr's at £25, so let me have it at that price. YES!!
Even better news, went back 1/2 hour later as forgot to buy something i went in for, and the pos is still there.
3 more up for grabs if anyone's interested.

  • Had three of these in succession bought and returned to ebuyer not so long ago, (at about £50). They had a massive problem with the auto tracking not working correctly and I couldn't get one that worked. Check them carefully and be prepared to have to take back.
