    Happened to my computer a while back, I finally diagnosed it as a motherboard failure.

    Disconnect everything from the motherboard, except cpu and ram. See if it works. If it does, plug things in one by one until it stops.

    You can also try removing individual sticks of ram, to see if any of them are faulty.

    If you have a spare graphics card, try it too.

    Sounds to me like a dodgy graphics card/cable...

    The same happend to me, and i found it to be a dodgy cable (cat chewed it)

    I can may be rule out the cable as i don't have a cat.

    I have connected my sons laptop to the monitor and it worked ok,so the monitor and cable must be ok.

    that rules out the monitor then :(

    If does the PC have a seperate video card (the part you plug the monitor into) or is it onboard...likely to be right next to the usb ports etc...
    If seperate card, remove and refit the card and try again...swop it out with a known good card (if possible)
