Lean-to greenhouse over kitchen window?
Options
Is this a good or bad idea? Has anyone else done this?
I'm trying to decide where to put a greenhouse. The back of my house is south facing so putting it towards the bottom of the 50ft garden puts it in the shade of 'end neighbour's trees. So I thought about putting a 6ft deep one over the back of the house, including the kitchen window.
I have measured up and a 6ft wide one only just covers the width of the window and an 8ft one goes just over the downpipe and drain . How would I deal with this?
I can see the advantage of it insulating the house in winter and the wall heating up in the day and keeping the greenhouse warm during the night, but are there pro's and cons I've not thought of?

Sorry had to use the quote to get into the reply area:mad:
I assume the drain you mean is the waste from the sink etc. Don't include this in any enclosed space - nasty sewer smells will make the greenhouse unpleasent to be in. putting a greenhouse over the window is not really a problem but have you thought about the loss of light to the kitchen, once you have staging and plants in the greenhouse light transmission will fall. Also don't forget the lack of ventilation, no opening the window on a sunny day as the plants may well need the heat!Don't blame me, I voted Monster Raving Loony!:rotfl:0 -
If you could take a few pictures of available areas people should be able to give you some pointers.TOP MONEYSAVING TIP
Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!0 -
If the back of your house is south-facing and you put a smallish lean-to on it, it will get very hot inside in summer. This will mean you'll need to shade it.....and guess what that will do to the light levels in your kitchen!
Parking something against a house wall is good, if you have the right wall!0 -
Thanks for your replies.
I had thought about the light issue. The kitchen has patio doors as well as this window, giving quite a bit of light. In fact, the previous owners have left vertical blinds on the window and patio doors so it could be that too much sun comes in during the summer months and some shading wouldn't come amiss.
I'll try to get a picture posted over the weekend.0
