Help! My Homepage Has Been Hijacked

Some while ago now my homepage on i.e. was hijacked and will only display Yahoo. I have tried resetting the homepage to something else but it just returns to Yahoo every time. Is there any way I can get rid of it and reset it with tha page of my choice? Somebody told me that the problem may lie within the System Registry, I don't know how true that is.

Anyway, any help would be gratefully received.

Oh by the way, my old pc is running Win98 2nd edition.

Regards JC

Sure its not a Hidden Yahoo Toolbar that has set the Hompage to Yahoo.

If so Go Into Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Toolbar.

Then Change yer homepage as usual.

I don't think it is yahoo toolbar, 'cos we have the toolbar on another PC and i hasn't changed a thing.
The post i put earlier should work, i'm almost 100% sure it has an opion for that in it.

Go here http://hijack-this.net/ and follow the instructions.

    NO NO NO. NEVER.

This from the author/developer of the REAL HijackThis ...

If your homepage remains hijacked and your REAL VALID programs can't change it back then run the REAL HijackThis from here....

    http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html
(5th box down the page under "official downloads")

...scan your computer with it then post the resulting logfile report to this thread.

We will give you advice on what to do to fix this problem.

Tell me more. I've never used it but seen it recommended on here but is this not the real thing?

    OK, I've read it now.
My Apologies. Hope you weren't too late.

No problem, djohn2002uk. Plenty of other people have made the same mistake. It's an easy one to make.

However, to be clear, the real program HijackThis has nothing to do with the fake "hijack-this.net".

Hopefully whatever is wrong with your computer we can still fix.

Anyone reading this should also read what Merijn has to say in the post I mentioned earlier at CastleCops.

If you and JC - the OP on this thread - are still having trouble follow the advice in my last post. Scan your system with the real HJT program and post your logfile report to this forum for more advice on how to fix your problems.

JC > please post your comments in this thread.

djohn2000uk > please start your own "new topic" in this forum.

We don't want two sets of problems running through the same thread. Causes confusion.

When posting a HJT log please also give us a brief description of the problems you are experiencing.

    Best of luck.

I think you misconstrued my first post which I've now edited.
I don't have a problem. I was just trying to help the OP but not in a very good way.
Thanks for the offer of help anyway.

That's fine. No "misconstuction" ... I just wanted to make sure I covered all bases if you, too, had issues.

    Take care.
