Genes reunited is good if you have a family tree that you want to publish and find people who have matches to your tree. I have found a lot of matches that have expanded mt tree.

Ancestry is absolutely brilliant. I live on it (when I'm not here of course). Well worth the money.

I have heard that Ancestry are having an offer where you get a 14 day free trial ( you have to put in your credit card) but you can cancel after the trial and before you have to pay.
My friend lived on the site for a fortnight then cancelled.

I agree with Me Myself and Yorkie about ancestry, it is great with access to all the censuses and more. I have also used https://www.familysearch.org many times, this gives you access to the Mormon IGI records for free. I have found whole new branches of family tree using this (if you find a couple who were married, you can then enter them on an advanced search and it will tell you all the children they had). If you've got a common surname like me then you may have to trawl through several page of results but if you know an area where your ancestors came from then it is quite easy to identify them. I also love genes reunited - this has also opened up new areas of my family tree to me.

I have used Genes Reunited, I put in a plea for help and got a couple of replies, one of them directed me to a chap who had extensive research on my family, although not my actaul branch and also was able to help us out of a hole with my husbands framil, I have since had several people contact me over hot matches......... really its up to you. I have found the Mormon site not to be that helpful in my case, but that does not apply to everyone I know.

I use Ancestry, Genes Reunited and FreeBMD.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

    Hi jujitsu,
The release of the 1841 census index is imminent on Ancestry. If you are thinking of using the 14 day free trial only - it might be worth waiting until you can have access to all the UK censuses. Should be sometime in the next month.
    happy hunting!

Genes reunited is very good, £10 a year subscription, you can put in your family tree then they link you to anyone else with the same names, I joined at Christmas and have now made contact with distant cousins. Ancestry is good for looking up census info. You can see the actual returns for 1851 - 1901. If you decide to join there's a 20% discount if you go via the Lost Cousins site. Genes reunited had an excellent forum where people will help if you get stuck. I can't reccomend them highly enough. Good luck with your serch. it's great fun.
