Getting rid of rust completely?

Hello,
I own a van and it's very rusty. I have used wet and dry paper and then applied p40. After this, I used a primer and left it to dry for about 15 minutes and then applied paint to the area. After doing all this, the beautiful british weather came in and it rained for weeks and now the rust is back again.
Can anyone tell me how can I get rid of the rust completely and for it not to reappear again?
Many thanks for all replies.

You could try a product called "rust eater" failing that it will have to be cut out.Spending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.0

Pull off any loose chunks (if it's bad you may create holes, but don't worry as what you're doing is going to help prevent it get worse) and scrub the rusty bit thoroughly with a wire brush. Using a wire brush attachment on a drill would speed this up but needs a bit more care. Wear goggles to ensure nothing gets in your eyes. Your aim is to get to bare shiny metal (or as close as possible). You could then apply a rust converter to the area. After this it might be a good idea to apply a zinc primer (such as http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Clearance/Adhesives+Sealants/Galvanising+Spray+400ml+Zinc/d50/sd2682/p29668 ), then fill, prime, and paint as usual.
There may be a better way and I look forward to seeing other responses.0 -
Agree with anewman you will need to get more vigorous with it. I would probably use an angle grinder to get back to bare metal, then a light body filling skim, sanded down and primed then painted.0

an angle grinder with these kind of flap type sanding discs work quite well, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/
and as hintza has suggested fill it with a light coat of body filler....work permit granted!0 -
there is a product called kurust thats good sand then apply then fill prime and spray0

Krust does eat rust, turns it into black metal. Its made by Hammerite, Halfords sell it in various packaging0

I used to grind it out, then a phosphate based rust eater, (turns it black) then a rust inhibiting primer, or resin brushed over the area, then paint it.0

If you really want rid of it, remove the affected panel and replace. Its really the best way.0

Someone very knowledgable about these things whoes opinion I trust suggested Coca Cola is as effective as any other rust treatment (short of getting back to bare metal) for surface rust. Comes as a bit of a surprise.
In the late 80's and 90's I used to fight rust on cars and it always came back by the end of the next winter. Cut off any blistered and rusting metal, the rust works into the metal sheet at the edges and not just the surface are, fill or weld or as said replace the panel... or the whole van for one that's not rusty.0
