I need to get a second phone line to help out a charoty i am involved in - obviusly i want to keep it as cheap as possible because they will be paying the bill.

I am with virgin and the phone will mostly be used for incoming calls so I will need an answerphone for when I am not able to take them .

what are my options for having a second number independant to my home line that can have an answerphone attached or use a phone with built in answerphone that can be called by anyone on any network?

would an internet based service be able to do this ? I am so confused with all the options

You still need a second landline to do this. Even if you do not make outgoing calls you will still have to pay for the install and line rental.
Have you considered a cheap PAYG mobile-beyond the purchase cost it would cost you next to nothing nothing if you are not making calls out, other than to retrieve your voicemails?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

https://www.vonage.co.uk maybe worth looking at, you will use your broadband connection. More info here http://www.vonage.co.uk/how-does-vonage-work/

There are others such as https://www.sipgate.co.uk, but Vonage maybe easier.

If you would you be happy to have a cheap to run new seperate geographical number and answer calls on your existing phone?, or by an exchange based voicemail facility which will mail you when someone leaves a message. Have a look at http://www.orbtalk.co.uk/free-number/
no rental ,no connection charge, free voicemail to e-mail,you only payg for calls you divert to your chosen answering point.

Also have a look at Skype - they may have a number 'local' to you as part of their Skype In service. Your voicemail can be retrieved anywhere online too!
