well, some of you probably realise i have been having major problems with my mcafee firewall

after getting some wonderful help here i managed to get it somewhat fixed but then it just went crazy and in the end i wound up having to transfer all my files to my external harddrive and then i spent 3 hours today reformatting and reinstalling everything

now i'm about ready to get working again BUT everything is NOT the way it was when this computer was shipped from the factory and i really don't like the new settings

the most annoying thing is the scroll feature. try a i might i can't seem to find the area where i can change this. it does this sloooowwww rippling thing vs scrolling nice and fast. does the same thing when i try to drag and drop, extremely irritating and it slows everything down... so, how do i fix that please? (i'm using XP Pro)

another thing, i can't quite get the screen resolution where i want it... last time i was able to use a very fine slider bar to make it somewhere between 1024x768 and 1280x1024
(i seem to recall the first number was in the 1100 range) but now i have either of those choices and that's it. i did find something where you can increase or decrease the text size by increments but it's still not right, and the increments are in 25% sizes so no fine tuning
this isn't crucial but now everything is weird in my task bar and links bar etc

i keep my windows explorer task bar on the left side (vertical) i keep adjusting it to the size i want then locking the tool bar. it keeps getting smaller and smaller so i can't ready anything...how do i stop that?

also, i have always had shortcut icons on this taskbar and it's got IE and shortcut to the desktop but normally when i drag and drop i can add another one but it won't let me! how can i change that? also the icons they have are enormous... i found a choice to make them small but they keep reverting back... any clues?

any help very much appreciated

    Hi HOLSALE,
I recently had the exact same problem a few weeks ago. I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP and when I got everything back up and running you scroll very slow and when you drag a window it is also extremely slow. I don't know what caused the problem but I fixed it when I wasn't trying to fix it. What happened was I had set WIndows Updater to download updates and the updater downloaded Windows XP service pack 2, so I installed it and to my suprise when I restarted my computer the problem was fully rectified and I have not had a problem since.
    Good Luck,
I know how annoying this is.

    thank you johnny!

i could have sworn i'd updated everything already at the microsoft site (first thing i downloaded after avg) but i'll go and look for that again just in case

meanwhile i discovered that evesham computers has support on the weekends, now let's hope they don't try to fob me off saying it's a windows issue, i paid good money for 3 years onsite warranty, if i have to i'll make them come to my house to resolve it

Sounds like you haven't got the correct drivers or monitor installed, hence it being slow and not being able to select the correct resolution.

Find out what graphics card you have. If you right click on the desktop and select Properties, then go to the Settings tab it should show what is currently setup. It may just be Windows generic ones that are currently running.

with the help of the support desk we've resolved the scrolling issues

i was using the drivers on one disk and it was adriver on a different disk! (that was as clear as mud)

also got the icons resolved... they were the size of 5p pieces which is ok for some but i normally have about 20 shortcuts in the task bar and have 6--8 windows open at time so i NEED small icons! at rate it's sorted

surprised to find the support desk open on a saturday, maybe my luck is turning :T ;)

    thanks for your help!

now i can FINALLY get some work done...dh took dd to glasgow early early this morning to give me the entire day to get work done... they'll be home in 3 hours so much for a full days work

Maybe the reason why updating to service pack 2 worked for me is because it included the proper drivers in the new version.
